Almost all rhodium originates in South Africa and is refined near the mines, with smaller flows from Russia and Zimbabwe. It moves by air in small, high-value consignments to catalyst makers in Europe, Asia and North America. US imports were 14,000 kg in 2025, while exports were only 340 kg. The real chokepoints are South African: electricity supply and the rising cost of deep mining, both cited by USGS for the 2025 output fall.
