# Rubidium: Emissions

Why rubidium's carbon footprint is unknown

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/rubidium/emissions/

Why rubidium's carbon footprint is unknown What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions.

Per t of rubidium compound; cradle-to-gate. Intensity: No published LCA found (2026 search). Global total: USGS MCS 2026 (volumes).

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | none in 2025 | – | no mining; stockpiled ore | Past extraction burdens sit with cesium or lithium as main products | USGS MCS 2026 |
| **Refining / processing** | not published | – | acid leaching, solvent extraction or fractional crystallisation to separate rubidium from cesium and potassium | Separation from chemically similar potassium and cesium is energy and reagent intensive | USGS MCS 2026 (process context) |
| **Movement** | not published | – | small air and sea consignments | Negligible in absolute terms | USGS MCS 2026 |
| **Usage** | not applicable directly | – | no combustion; used in glass, clocks, photocells, catalysts | No enabling or avoided emissions quantified | USGS MCS 2026 |
| **Recycling / end of life** | none | – | USGS reports no rubidium recycling | Dispersed use in glass and devices makes recovery impractical | USGS MCS 2026 |

#### Other environmental impacts

No known health issues from naturally occurring rubidium, and its use has minimal environmental impact (USGS 2026).

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Recover rubidium from lithium mica process liquors, so no dedicated mining is needed
- Scale low-reagent direct extraction methods (Mount Edon pilot reported 97% recovery)
- Substitute cesium or vice versa according to which by-product is available

#### India

India has no rubidium production, reserves or refining and imports small amounts for research and electronics; no footprint data exist (USGS MCS 2026).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
