# Salt: Extraction

Four ways to win salt from rock, brine and sea

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/salt/extraction/

What this tab covers How it is mined, drilled or grown, and processed into a tradeable form: the main methods compared, their unit economics, by-products, and the companies that do this work globally and in India.

Salt comes from four routes. Rock salt is mined underground from ancient evaporite beds and domes. Solution mining pumps water into salt beds and returns brine, which feeds chemical plants directly. Solar salt is evaporated from seawater or saline lakes in sunny climates. Vacuum-pan salt is brine boiled in vessels to a pure product. In the United States, brine made up 44% of salt sold in 2025, rock salt 38%, and solar and vacuum-pan salt 9% each.

Salt is the most widely produced mineral: almost every country has deposits or evaporation sites. There are four routes. Solar evaporation of seawater or lake brine is cheapest where sun, wind and flat coastal land meet, as in Gujarat's Little Rann of Kutch. Underground mining of rock salt supplies road salt in North America and Europe. Solution mining pumps water into salt beds and sends brine straight to chemical plants. Vacuum-pan evaporation boils purified brine into fine, pure food and pharmaceutical salt.

| **Vacuum-pan evaporation (refined salt)** | 9% of US salt sold in 2025 (USGS); India produced 5.5 Mt of refined salt in 2021-22 (IBM) | Tata Chemicals commissioned 70 kt of pharma-grade salt capacity at Middlewich, UK, in FY2025 (Tata Chemicals) | n/a | n/a | US vacuum and open-pan salt unit value about $260/t in 2025 (price, not cost; USGS) |

#### How each method works
**Solar evaporation (sea and lake brine)**

Seawater or subsoil brine is led through a series of shallow condenser and crystalliser pans. Sun and wind concentrate it until sodium chloride crystallises, leaving bitterns rich in bromine, magnesium and potassium. Salt is harvested by hand or machine, stacked and washed. Gujarat's coastal and Rann of Kutch salt works are the world's best-known example.

Lowest energy cost; depends on monsoon and weather, labour-intensive in India, and needs large land areas.
IBM Indian Minerals Yearbook 2022; USGS MCS 2026; Archean annual report FY2025 **Underground rock-salt mining**

Room-and-pillar mines with drilling and blasting or continuous miners work thick evaporite beds and domes hundreds of metres down. Rock is crushed and screened, often with an anti-caking agent, and sold mostly as road salt.

Large, weather-independent output near winter markets; mine flooding and seasonal demand swings.
USGS MCS 2026 **Solution mining (brine wells)**

Water is injected into salt beds through wells and saturated brine is pumped out, then piped to chlor-alkali or soda ash plants or to vacuum-pan refineries. The caverns left behind can store gas, oil or helium.

Cheapest feed for chemical plants; subsidence and brine disposal risks.
USGS MCS 2026 **Vacuum-pan evaporation (refined salt)**

Purified brine is boiled under vacuum in multiple-effect evaporators to produce fine, uniform, high-purity crystals for food, pharma and specialty uses. It is energy-intensive but gives the highest-value product.

High purity and margins; high energy use.
