# Salt: Overview

Chemicals and icy roads: where most salt really goes

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/salt/overview/

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Chlor-alkali: brine electrolysis to chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen (for PVC, alumina refining, pulp, soaps, water treatment)** | 42% | about 24 Mt a year in the USbasis | Sodium chloride is the cheapest source of both chlorine and sodium. Electrolysing saturated brine gives chlorine for PVC and caustic soda for alumina, paper and soaps. Plants sit on salt beds or near ports and often pump their own brine. Demand in Asia is growing with PVC (USGS). USGS MCS 2026 | None for chlorine at scale Hydrochloric acid recycling within some chemical chains |
| **Synthetic soda ash (Solvay and related processes)** | n/a | n/a basis | The Solvay process turns brine and limestone into sodium carbonate for glass and detergents. China's mostly synthetic 38 Mt of soda ash and India's Gujarat plants rely on salt, which is why Tata Chemicals runs its own salt works beside its Mithapur soda ash plant. USGS MCS 2026 (Soda ash); Conway, Material World (2023) | Natural soda ash from trona (US, Turkey, China's Inner Mongolia) |
| **Highway de-icing** | 37% | about 21 Mt a year in the USbasis | Rock salt lowers the freezing point of water and is by far the cheapest de-icer, at about $54/t f.o.b. in the US in 2025. The number of icing events, not total snowfall, drives demand (USGS). USGS MCS 2026 | Calcium chloride, calcium magnesium acetate and potassium chloride (costlier, USGS) Sand and grit for traction |
| **Food and edible salt, including iodised salt** | n/a | India: about 6.3 Mt a year edible requirement (including cattle); 7.86 Mt iodised salt produced in 2020-21basis | Salt is essential to human and animal diets and to food preservation. Adding potassium iodate turns it into the cheapest public-health tool against iodine deficiency, which India and China have used for decades (Conway). IBM Indian Minerals Yearbook 2022; USGS MCS 2026 | Potassium chloride and low-sodium blends (USGS: at higher cost) Iodine supplements in place of iodised salt |
| **Agriculture and feed, water treatment and softening, and general industry (dyes, leather, oil drilling)** | 21% | about 12 Mt a year in the USbasis | Salt licks and feed premixes supply sodium to livestock; ion-exchange water softeners regenerate with brine; tanneries and textile dyers use salt to fix hides and dyes; oil drillers use salt-saturated muds through salt beds. USGS MCS 2026 | Potassium chloride in water softeners Mineral premixes in feed |

Shares are US 2025 (USGS); 'other' is the remainder and includes food. In India, industrial users (chlor-alkali, soda ash and allied sectors) take more than 60% of consumption (BRS via Breakwave Advisors, 2025).

#### From mine to user

1. **1. Resource** Seawater, salt lakes, rock-salt beds and domes. Reserves are effectively unlimited (USGS). In India about 80% of salt is sea salt (IBM 2022).
2. **2. Extraction** Solar evaporation pans (Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Western Australia, Mexico), underground rock-salt mines, or solution mining that pumps brine to chemical plants.
3. **3. Washing, refining and iodisation** Raw salt is washed, crushed, vacuum-refined for food or pharma, and iodised. India had 518 iodisation units with 21.85 Mt of capacity in March 2022 (IBM).
4. **4. Captive brine to chemicals** Chlor-alkali and soda ash plants take brine by pipeline or raw salt by truck; about 90% of US chemical salt is used as brine (USGS).
5. **5. Bulk export** India shipped a record 17.3 Mt in 2024, mostly from Kandla, Mundra and Jakhau to China, South Korea and Japan in Supramax bulkers (BRS via Breakwave Advisors, 2025).
6. **6. Stockpiling and distribution** Road authorities build rock-salt stockpiles before winter; food salt is branded and packed (Tata Salt and others in India).
7. **7. End use** Chemicals, de-icing, food, feed and water treatment. Salt is consumed or dispersed and not recycled (USGS).

#### Price movement snapshot 2026-10-25

World production 270.7 m tonnes, 2024 Largest producer China 20.55% of world

#### Three things to know

- US vacuum-pan salt sold for about $260/t in 2025, while salt in brine fetched about $11/t.
- In Venice between the 14th and 16th centuries, salt was 30% to 50% of import tonnage (Kurlansky, via Conway).
- Several small icing events need more road salt than one big snowstorm, USGS notes.
