What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Electrical, electronic and other industrial uses (excluding solar)** | 41.7% | about 471 Moz (about 14,600 t) in 2025basis | Silver has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of any metal and resists oxidation, so it wins in switches, relays, contacts, printed pastes and car electronics. Brazing alloys and ethylene oxide catalysts add more. Each item uses little silver, so price rarely changes the design. Silver Institute / Metals Focus, World Silver Survey 2026 press release (15 Apr 2026); pv magazine USA (15 Apr 2026) for PV | Copper (conductors, some contacts) Gold and palladium (high-end contacts) Copper-based brazing alloys |
| **Solar photovoltaic cells** | 16.5% | 186.6 Moz (about 5,800 t) in 2025basis | Silver paste forms the fine conductive fingers on silicon solar cells that collect current. It prints well and fires at low temperature. Makers cut silver per cell every year, and PV use fell 6% in 2025 and is forecast to fall 19% in 2026 as record prices speed thrifting. Silver Institute, as reported by pv magazine USA (15 Apr 2026) | Copper plating and silver-coated copper paste Copper-based metallisation in heterojunction cells |
| **Jewellery** | 17% | about 196 Moz (about 6,100 t) in 2025basis | Silver is white, bright and cheap enough for daily wear, anklets, toe rings and wedding gifts. India is the largest jewellery market. Demand is price-sensitive: Indian fabrication fell 20% in 2025 as rupee prices hit records. Silver Institute interim release (10 Feb 2026); Silver Institute / Metals Focus, World Silver Survey 2026 press release (15 Apr 2026) | Gold and gold-plated jewellery Stainless steel and fashion jewellery White metal alloys |
| **Bars and coins (physical investment)** | 17% | about 189 Moz (about 5,900 t) in 2025basis | Silver is the cheaper precious metal, so small savers buy bars and coins as a hedge. Indian bar and coin demand rose 33% in 2025 (Silver Institute). Silver ETFs, not counted here, held about 1.31 billion oz in early 2026. Silver Institute interim release (10 Feb 2026); Silver Institute / Metals Focus, World Silver Survey 2026 press release (15 Apr 2026) | Silver ETFs and MCX futures Gold bars and coins Silver mining equities |
| **Silverware and photography** | 8% | about 88 Moz (about 2,700 t) in 2025basis | Cutlery, utensils and pooja items are traditional in India; silver halide film survives in medical X-ray and niche photography. Silverware demand fell 21% in 2025 to a four-year low, with losses concentrated in India. Silver Institute / Metals Focus, World Silver Survey 2026 press release (15 Apr 2026); USGS MCS 2026 (substitutes) | Stainless steel and plated tableware Digital imaging (in place of film) |

Shares of 2025 world silver demand of 1,130 Moz (35,100 t), Silver Institute / Metals Focus. Jewellery and investment volumes are derived from the Silver Institute's 2026 forecasts and stated growth rates; the last line is a residual. ETF flows are excluded.

#### From mine to user

1. **Mining (mostly as a by-product)** World mine output was 26,000 t in 2025 (USGS); about 72% comes from mines where silver is not the main product (Silver Institute).
2. **Concentration** Ore is milled and floated into lead, zinc or copper concentrate that carries the silver, or leached at gold-silver mines into dore.
3. **Smelting and refining** Lead and copper smelters recover silver from bullion and anode slimes; Hindustan Zinc refines silver at Pantnagar from its Rajasthan lead-zinc ores.
4. **Bullion refining and bar making** Refiners produce 1,000-oz London Good Delivery bars and 30 kg and 1 kg bars for India. MMTC-PAMP can refine 600 t of silver a year (ICRA, Jul 2026).
5. **Trading and vaulting** London, New York (COMEX held about 15,000 t at end-2025, USGS), Shanghai and Hong Kong. India was the largest importer by value in 2024 (20.3%, UN Comtrade).
6. **Fabrication** Paste makers supply solar-cell factories; electronics, brazing and catalyst makers; jewellers and silversmiths in Rajkot, Agra, Salem and Kolkata.
7. **Recycling** Scrap from jewellery, silverware, electronics and photography supplied 197.6 Moz in 2025, a 12-year high (Silver Institute).
