# Soda ash: Criticality

Why concentrated supply still is not critical

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/soda_ash/criticality/

What this tab covers How exposed economies are to a supply disruption: the EU, US and India listings, the concentration score, and a quantified exposure for the US, EU, India, China, Japan, Latin America, the Middle East and Australia. Where the EU scored it, a chart of supply risk against economic importance, with import reliance, recycling input and substitutes.

#### Exposure by region

| Region | Exposure | Share of world output | Share of world imports | Share of world exports | Net trade (US$) | On own critical list | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **US** | Low | – | 0.0% | 42.5% | +$1.71 bn | No | Second-largest producer (12 Mt, all natural) and largest exporter (42.5% of 2024 export value), with more than 50% of output exported in 2025 (USGS 2026; Comtrade). |
| **EU** | High | – | 21.0% | 16.2% | −$260.4 m | No | Makes synthetic soda ash under high energy costs as European chemical capacity closes, and soda ash is not on the EU critical list (USGS 2026). |
| **India** | High | – | 4.9% | 2.3% | −$117.7 m | No | Produces only synthetic soda ash and imports 25-26% of supply, mainly from China, behind a Rs 20,108/t minimum import price (Outlook Business 2025; Business Standard 2024). |
| **China** | Low | – | 5.0% | 7.3% | +$75.3 m | No | Largest producer (38 Mt, mostly synthetic) with new natural capacity in Inner Mongolia, and the world price-setter via ZCE futures (USGS 2026). |
| **Japan** | High | – | 1.5% | 0.1% | −$61.1 m | No | Not listed by USGS among natural producers and relies on imports or domestic synthetic output. |
| **Latin America** | High | – | 26.3% | 0.0% | −$1.14 bn | no list | Mexico, Brazil and Chile are the three largest importers by value (8.2%, 7.4%, 6.3% in 2024), Chile partly for lithium carbonate (Comtrade). |
| **Middle East** | High | – | 1.9% | 0.0% | −$82.8 m | no list | Turkey, bridging Europe and the Middle East, produces about 6 Mt mostly natural and is the second-largest exporter (23.2% of 2024 value) (USGS; Comtrade). |
| **Australia** | High | – | 1.4% | 0.0% | −$61.0 m | No | Not listed by USGS among producers and relies on imports. |

Exposure rating: **High** when the region is a net importer whose import share is at least three times its share of world output (or, for farm goods, it produces under 70% of what it consumes); **Medium** for other net importers (or 70-95% self-sufficiency), raised to High when world supply is highly concentrated in another country; **Low** for net exporters or self-sufficient regions. Net importer status uses tonnage where reported, otherwise value. Output: n/a. Trade: UN Comtrade 2024 (EU = sum of member states, including intra-EU trade). Critical lists: US 2025, EU 2024/1252, India 2023, China 2016 strategic minerals, Japan METI, Australia 2024.

Soda ash is not on the US 2025, India 2023 or EU critical raw materials lists. Supply is concentrated, but the substitute route is always available: any country with salt, limestone and energy can make it synthetically, at higher cost. Caustic soda can replace it in pulp and paper, water treatment and some chemicals. The real exposure is for glass and lithium-chemical producers in importing countries, where freight and energy costs set the margin. Its role in lithium carbonate gives it a quiet link to batteries.
EU 2023 Not assessed US 2025 list No India 2023 list No
