How one country's baijiu habit dominates the trade What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

World sorghum trade (HS 1007) was worth about $2.6 billion of exports and $2.9 billion of imports in 2024 (Comtrade), a small share of the crop. The US supplied 56.7% of export value, Australia 24.4% and Argentina 9.5%. China took 89.0% of imports, for feed and for distilling baijiu. No other buyer reached 2%. Cargoes move in the heavy grain, soya and sorghum (HSS) class of dry-bulk freight, for example from the US Gulf to Japan (Geman, pdf p. 31). In 2018 China briefly opened an anti-dumping case on US sorghum during the trade war.
