What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Oil and gas drilling fluids (ground celestite as a weighting agent)** | 65% | about 7,800 t Sr a year in the USbasis | Ground celestite is dense (strontium sulphate), so it adds weight to drilling mud to control well pressure, much like barite. It needs no chemical processing, only grinding. Drillers switch to it when barite is expensive or scarce, which is why US celestite imports jump from 29 t (2024) to 8,100 t (2025) as relative prices shift. USGS MCS 2026, Strontium | Barite (preferred weighting agent) Hematite and ilmenite weighting agents Cesium and potassium formate brines (high-pressure wells) |
| **Ceramic ferrite permanent magnets** | 14% | about 1,700 t Sr a year in the USbasis | Strontium carbonate is sintered with iron oxide to make strontium hexaferrite, the cheapest permanent magnet by far. It goes into small motors, loudspeakers, fridge seals and car parts. Strontium ferrite works at higher temperatures than barium ferrite, and it needs no rare earths. USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 | Barium ferrite (lower maximum operating temperature) Neodymium-iron-boron magnets (stronger, costlier) |
| **Pyrotechnics and signal flares** | 14% | about 1,700 t Sr a year in the USbasis | Strontium nitrate burns with the brightest, purest red, which is why it is in fireworks, road flares and military and marine distress signals. USGS says no substitute matches its brilliance and visibility. The US is funding domestic production of strontium nitrate, oxalate and peroxide for defence. USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 | Lithium salts (less brilliant red) Electronic signals and LED flares |
| **Aluminium master alloys (Al-Sr modifier for casting alloys)** | 5% | n/a basis | A small dose of strontium changes the silicon in aluminium-silicon casting alloys from coarse plates to fine fibres, which improves ductility and fatigue life. It is used in car wheels and engine parts. Strontium is preferred because its effect lasts through remelting. EU CRM study 2023; USGS MCS 2026 | Sodium modification (short-lived) Antimony modification |
| **Electrolytic zinc refining, glass, pigments and fillers** | 7% | about 840 t Sr a year in the USbasis | Strontium carbonate removes lead from zinc electrolyte, and it is used in some specialty glass and ceramic glazes. These are small, steady uses. Strontium carbonate was once used heavily in cathode-ray TV glass to block X-rays, a market that disappeared with flat screens. USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 | Barium compounds in some glass and pigment uses Other purification reagents in zinc refining |

US shares are by US imports (USGS MCS 2026); EU shares by EU end use (EU CRM 2023), where drilling fluids are 0% and magnets and pyrotechnics are 40% each. World celestite output was about 450,000 t gross in 2025, about 197,000 t strontium content (450,000 x 43.88%).

#### From mine to user

1. **1. Celestite mining** Celestite (strontium sulphate) is mined in open pits, mainly in Iran, Spain and China. World output was about 450,000 t in 2025 (USGS).
2. **2. Beneficiation** Ore is crushed, sorted and sometimes floated to raise grade. Iranian celestite runs above 85%, Chinese 35-60% (Guidechem, 2025).
3. **3a. Grinding for drilling mud** Celestite for drilling fluids is only ground and bagged; Mexico supplied more than 99% of US imports (2021-24).
4. **3b. Chemical conversion to strontium carbonate** Celestite is reduced with coal to strontium sulphide (black ash), leached and precipitated as carbonate. China had about 205,000 t/yr of capacity (Dec 2024).
5. **4. Downstream compounds** Carbonate is converted to nitrate, oxide, peroxide, oxalate or metal for fireworks, flares, alloys and chemicals.
6. **5. Fabrication** Ferrite magnet makers sinter carbonate with iron oxide; pyrotechnic makers blend nitrate; aluminium plants add Al-Sr master alloy.
7. **6. End users** Oil and gas drillers, motor and speaker makers, fireworks and defence suppliers, aluminium casters.

#### Three things to know

- Iran mined about 250,000 t of celestite in 2025, over half the world total (USGS).
- A strontium optical lattice clock went on sale in Japan in 2025 for $3.3 million (USGS).
- World strontium sales were only about $16 million in 2014 (Tilton & Guzmán).
