# Sulfur: Emissions

A low footprint for oil's leftover

A low footprint for oil's leftover What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 0.10 t CO2e per t range 0-0.2 · cradle-to-gate; Claus conversion, tail-gas incineration and forming; by-product allocation Global emissions per year 8.00 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · 0.1 t/t times 84 Mt; indicative

Per t of recovered elemental sulfur, cradle-to-gate, with emissions of the host gas plant or refinery mostly allocated to fuels. Intensity: ecoinvent-based by-product values (indicative). Global total: Derived from USGS MCS 2026.

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | allocated mostly to oil and gas | – | sour gas and crude production | sulfur carries little of the upstream burden under economic allocation | Indicative |
| **Refining / processing** | about 0.05-0.15 t CO2e/t (indicative) | 80% | amine regeneration steam, Claus furnace, tail-gas incineration fuel | Claus reactions are exothermic and make steam | Indicative |
| **Movement** | about 0.02-0.06 t CO2/t for Gulf to China or Morocco (indicative) | 20% | bulk carriers emit roughly 3-10 g CO2 per tonne-km depending on size (IMO Fourth GHG Study 2020, indicative) | molten sulfur shipping needs heating | IMO Fourth GHG Study 2020 (indicative) |
| **Usage** | burning to sulfuric acid emits SO2 traces but no CO2, and exports heat | – | each t S gives about 3 t acid; acid plants export steam and power, an avoided-emissions credit | Sulfur left in fuels would form 2 t SO2 per t S when burned; the IMO 2020 cap cut ship fuel sulfur to 0.5% from 3.5% | Chemistry; IMO (2020) |
| **Recycling / end of life** | spent acid regeneration | – | US reclaims 2.5-5 Mt of spent sulfuric acid a year | sulfur ends up as gypsum, sulfates or in fertilised soils | USGS MCS 2026 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Sulfur's main environmental role is SO2: recovering it prevents acid rain and fine particle pollution. Stockpiled blocks can produce acid runoff and dust. Smelter SO2 capture is now up to 99% at modern plants (Tilton 2003).

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Electrify or heat-integrate Claus and tail-gas units
- Use acid-plant steam for power at fertiliser and HPAL sites
- Ship on efficient vessels and shorter routes
- Keep high SO2 capture at smelters

#### India

India recovers about 3.7 Mt a year at refineries such as Jamnagar and imports 2.25 Mt, 84% from the Middle East, so its footprint is small in CO2 but exposed to Gulf shipping risk (USGS 2026; Argus).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
