# Talc: Characteristics

Why plate shape and asbestos-free purity matter

What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).

#### Supply volume characteristics

| Characteristic | Figure | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Current production volume** | about 6.9 Mt (2025e, USGS); 7.4 Mt talc, steatite and pyrophyllite in 2024 (World Mining Data) | India 1.5 Mt, China 1.3 Mt, Brazil 0.57 Mt and the US 0.49 Mt in 2025. Afghanistan mines a large share of what Pakistan mills and exports. | USGS MCS 2026; World Mining Data 2026 |
| **Inventory and stock levels** | not published; no exchange or strategic stocks | Stocks are crude ore piles and milled-grade silos held by producers and distributors. US imports rose 12% in 2025 while exports fell 65%, suggesting a shift in trade flows rather than stockbuilding. No government stockpile. | USGS MCS 2026 |
| **Capacity utilisation** | not published | US mine output of 490,000 t from five mines is about 100,000 t per mine (USGS). Cosmetic talc demand has fallen under litigation and regulatory pressure, idling some Western capacity (Barretts Minerals Chapter 11, 2023). | USGS MCS 2026; content_v2 company data |
| **Geographic and producer concentration** | India about 22%, top-3 (India, China, Brazil) about 49%, HHI about 1,100 (USGS 2025); WMD HHI 1,021 (2024) | Western specialty supply is concentrated in a few firms (Imerys, IMI Fabi, Magris Talc, Minerals Technologies), but volumes are not published. | USGS MCS 2026; World Mining Data 2026 |
| **Supply elasticity** | moderate: existing mines can add shifts quickly; new mines take 3-7 years with permitting | Deposits are widespread and identified resources are about five times reserves (USGS). Asbestos-free certification is the binding constraint for cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades. | USGS MCS 2026 |
| **Project pipeline and CapEx** | not published | No large named projects found. Supply growth is incremental from China, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Regulatory changes (ECHA Category 1B proposal, July 2025; FDA asbestos testing proposal, Dec 2024) may reduce demand rather than add supply. | USGS MCS 2026 |
| **Logistics and export flows** | world export value $951 million in 2024; China 15.6%, US 11.5%, France 10.6%, Pakistan 9.5% | Milled talc moves in bags and bulk containers; Germany, the US and Japan were top importers. Afghan crude moves by truck to Pakistani mills, a fragile, informal route exposed to border closures. | UN Comtrade 2024; USGS MCS 2026 |

#### Material characteristics Industrial mineral

Talc is the softest mineral, a platy magnesium silicate. Its value comes from whiteness, fineness, lamellarity (plate shape) and purity, especially freedom from asbestos. In polypropylene it adds stiffness; in paint and paper it acts as a filler. Milled specialty grades sell for several times crude ore, so particle engineering is where value is made.

| Property | Value / specification | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Purity / grade** | Talc content from about 50% (industrial) to 98% (cosmetic and pharma); must be asbestos-free | Sets end use; asbestos contamination drives litigation and bans | USP talc monograph; FDA proposal Dec 2024 (USGS MCS 2026) |
| **Asbestos testing** | XRD plus polarised light microscopy, or TEM, under the FDA's proposed rule | Required for cosmetic talc in the US; buyers demand certified mines | USGS MCS 2026 (FDA, Dec 2024) |
| **Brightness / whiteness** | about 80-95% (ISO brightness, grade dependent; indicative) | White grades sell to cosmetics, paper and paint at a premium | Producer specifications (indicative) |
| **Particle size** | median d50 about 1-20 microns with controlled top cut (indicative) | Fine, narrow grades stiffen plastics without weakening impact strength | Producer specifications (indicative) |
| **Lamellarity (platiness)** | high aspect-ratio plates (macro- versus micro-crystalline talc) | Platy talc reinforces polypropylene and acts as a barrier in coatings | Producer literature (indicative) |
| **Hardness and chemistry** | Mohs 1; Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, hydrophobic | Soft and non-abrasive for processing equipment; hydrophobicity suits oil-based paints, not water-based | USGS MCS 2026; standard mineral data |
