# Tantalum: Extraction

Why much tantalum is still dug and washed by hand

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/tantalum/extraction/

What this tab covers How it is mined, drilled or grown, and processed into a tradeable form: the main methods compared, their unit economics, by-products, and the companies that do this work globally and in India.

Tantalum occurs with niobium in granitic pegmatites and in weathered or alluvial deposits. In the Great Lakes region of Africa, much ore is dug and washed by artisanal miners and sold as coltan, a columbite-tantalite mix. Australia and Brazil produce from larger hard-rock mines, often with lithium or tin. About 35% of supply is a by-product. Concentrates are digested in acid, purified by solvent extraction and reduced to powder or melted into ingot. The United States has mined no tantalum since 1959.

Tantalum has two very different supply routes. Industrial mines in Australia, Brazil and China work hard-rock pegmatites, often with lithium, tin or niobium. Most supply, however, comes from artisanal and small-scale miners digging coltan in the DRC, Rwanda and Nigeria, whose output is traded through local buyers and due-diligence schemes. Tin slags and recycled scrap add more. Processing into powder and metal is concentrated in China, the US, Germany, Japan, Kazakhstan and Thailand.

#### Methods compared

| Method | Share of supply | Typical scale | Recovery / efficiency | By-products | Unit cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Artisanal and small-scale coltan mining (Central and West Africa)** | DRC, Rwanda, Nigeria and Burundi: 2,092 t of 2,500 t (about 84%) of 2025 mine output, mostly artisanal (USGS); Africa about 62% of 2015 supply (MMTA) | DRC 1,300 t, Rwanda 400 t, Nigeria 390 t in 2025 (USGS) | n/a | tin (cassiterite) and niobium | n/a |
| **Hard-rock pegmatite mining (often with lithium, tin or niobium)** | Australia, Brazil, China and Russia: 350 t of 2,500 t (about 14%) of 2025 mine output (USGS) | AMG's Mibra mine in Brazil processes about 300,000 lb (136 t) of tantalum a year (Argus 2020); Sons of Gwalia's Australian mines produced 1.3 million lb of Ta2O5 in 2000 (BCGS 2002) | n/a | lithium concentrate, tin, niobium | n/a |
| **Tin-slag by-product** | about 11% of 2015 supply (MMTA) | n/a | n/a | tantalum is the by-product of tin | n/a |
| **Recycling of manufacturing and end-of-life scrap** | may supply up to 30% of US primary processors' consumption (USGS); EU end-of-life recycling input rate 1% (EU CRM 2023) | value of US tantalum waste and scrap imports rose 40% in 2025 (USGS) | n/a | n/a | n/a |

#### How each method works
**Artisanal and small-scale coltan mining (Central and West Africa)**

Diggers work weathered pegmatites and alluvial gravels with hand tools, wash ore in sluices and pans, and sell concentrate to local traders, who tag and export it under traceability schemes.

Flexible and low-capital; prone to conflict financing and smuggling, which traceability rules try to control.
USGS MCS 2026; MMTA (2016) **Hard-rock pegmatite mining (often with lithium, tin or niobium)**

Open-pit mining of pegmatite ore, crushing and gravity and magnetic separation to tantalite concentrate. Australian mines such as Wodgina and Greenbushes supplied perhaps 60% of the world in the mid-2000s (MMTA).

Traceable and large-scale; high fixed costs, and mines have closed when prices fell (Talison/GAM in 2008 and after 2011, MMTA).
 USGS MCS 2026; Argus (Mar 2020); BCGS (2002); MMTA (2016) **Tin-slag by-product**

Tin smelters in Southeast Asia and Brazil leave slags containing tantalum, which are leached or upgraded to synthetic tantalum-niobium concentrate.

Uses an existing waste stream; output tied to tin smelting.
MMTA (2016) **Recycling of manufacturing and end-of-life scrap**

Capacitor, sputtering-target and mill scrap, and carbide and superalloy scrap, are chemically reprocessed or remelted.

Conflict-free and low-cost feed; little recovery from used electronics.
USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 Unit economics are indicative ranges from the sources named; costs vary widely by deposit, region and year.

#### By-product supply

Companionality is about 35%: a third of tantalum is co-produced with tin, lithium or niobium, the rest mined for itself. Artisanal supply responds quickly to price, but industrial mines have repeatedly shut when prices fell, so supply swings sharply.

#### Share produced as a by-product
About 35% of primary supply comes as a by-product (Nassar, Graedel & Harper 2015, approximate).

#### Who does it: India

India has no tantalum mine or processing industry of note. It imported only $2.4 million (about 19 t gross) of HS 8103 tantalum products in 2024 and exported $1.0 million (Comtrade). Tantalum is on India's 2023 critical list.
