#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **TiO2 white pigment for paints and coatings, plastics, paper and inks** | 90% | about 8.8 Mt TiO2 content of feedstock a yearbasis | Titanium dioxide scatters visible light more strongly than any other white powder, so a thin coat hides the surface below. It is chemically inert, non-toxic and UV-resistant. No other pigment gives the same opacity per kilogram, which is why paint, plastics and paper makers pay about $3,200/t for it (US 2025, USGS). Iluka presentation (May 2017); USGS MCS 2026 | Ground and precipitated calcium carbonate (extenders) Kaolin Talc |
| **Titanium metal: aircraft frames, engines and fasteners** | 2.7% | about 165 kt of sponge a yearbasis | Titanium alloys are as strong as many steels at much lower weight, resist corrosion and keep their strength at elevated temperatures, and they are compatible with carbon-fibre composites in modern airframes. That makes them the choice for landing gear, engine fans and compressors and structural parts. Aerospace takes most US titanium metal (USGS). EU CRM study 2023; USGS MCS 2026; Iluka (2017) | Aluminium alloys Carbon-fibre composites Nickel superalloys and steels (hot or high-load parts) |
| **Titanium metal: medical implants and equipment** | 1.5% | about 90 kt of sponge a yearbasis | Titanium is biocompatible, bonds with bone and does not corrode in the body, so it is used for hip and knee joints, dental implants, bone plates and surgical tools. EU CRM study 2023; USGS MCS 2026 | Cobalt-chromium alloys Surgical stainless steel Ceramics such as zirconia (dental) |
| **Titanium metal: automotive, consumer goods, power and nuclear plant, chemical processing and marine hardware** | 1.8% | about 110 kt of sponge a yearbasis | Where corrosion resistance matters, such as heat exchangers, desalination, chlorine plants and seawater systems, titanium lasts longer than steel. It is also used in armour, valves, exhausts, watches and spectacle frames. EU CRM study 2023; USGS MCS 2026 | Zirconium alloys, nickel alloys and specialty stainless steels (corrosion resistance) Aluminium and steel (structural parts) |
| **Welding-rod coatings (rutile fluxes)** | 4% | about 390 kt TiO2 content a yearbasis | Natural rutile in electrode coatings gives a stable arc, easy slag removal and a smooth weld, which makes rutile electrodes the general-purpose choice for fabricators. Iluka (2017); USGS MCS 2026 | Basic (lime-fluorspar) electrode coatings Cellulosic coatings Flux-cored wire with other flux systems |

Pigment, metal and welding shares (90/6/4) are Iluka's 2017 split of titanium feedstock demand; metal is split further using EU end-use shares for titanium metal (EU CRM 2023). USGS says ilmenite is about 90% of titanium mineral consumption and more than 95% of US concentrates go to pigment.

#### From mine to user

1. **1. Mining mineral sands or hard rock** Most ilmenite and rutile is dredged or dry-mined from old beach and dune sands; Canada, Norway and South Africa also mine hard-rock titaniferous ore. World output was 9.8 Mt TiO2 content in 2025 (USGS).
2. **2. Wet concentration** Spirals separate heavy minerals from sand to make heavy-mineral concentrate. Kenmare's Moma mine produced 1.23 Mt of concentrate in 2025.
3. **3. Dry separation** Magnetic and electrostatic separators split ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite; IREL's Chavara plant has capacity for 262,900 t a year of separated minerals.
4. **4. Upgrading** Ilmenite is smelted to titanium slag (80-95% TiO2) or converted to synthetic rutile; Iluka made 209.9 kt of synthetic rutile in 2025.
5. **5. Pigment manufacture** The sulfate route digests ilmenite or slag in sulfuric acid; the chloride route chlorinates rutile, slag or synthetic rutile. World pigment capacity was 9.9 Mt in 2025, 6.0 Mt of it in China (USGS).
6. **6. Metal: chlorination and Kroll reduction** Titanium tetrachloride is reduced with molten magnesium to porous sponge. World sponge output was 370 kt in 2025: China 260 kt, Japan 53 kt, Russia 25 kt (USGS).
7. **7. Melting and mill products** Sponge and scrap are vacuum-melted into ingot and rolled or forged into plate, bar and forgings; the US imported 44 kt of sponge and 32 kt of scrap in 2025 (USGS).

#### Three things to know

- More than 95% of US titanium mineral concentrates go into TiO2 pigment, not metal.
- China held about 6.0 Mt of the world's 9.9 Mt TiO2 pigment capacity in 2025.
- US titanium sponge imports reached a record 44,000 t in 2025, after the last domestic sponge plant closed in 2024.
