# Vanadium: Emissions

A heavy footprint that depends on accounting

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/vanadium/emissions/

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 33.1 t CO2e per t range not published; co-product allocation can lower it greatly (indicative) · cradle-to-gate global average per kg V from ecoinvent data Global emissions per year 3.60 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · 33.1 t CO2e/t x 110,000 t V (derived, indicative)

Per t of vanadium contained (cradle-to-gate). Intensity: Nuss & Eckelman 2014, PLoS ONE (ecoinvent-based, indicative). Global total: USGS MCS 2026; Nuss & Eckelman 2014; derived.

#### Footprint by lifecycle phase

| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Extraction** | not published separately | – | mining titanomagnetite at under 2% V; for co-product supply, a share of iron ore mining | Low grades mean large volumes of rock per tonne of vanadium at primary mines (Largo's ore averaged 0.50% effective grade in 2025) | USGS MCS 2026; Largo via content_v2 |
| **Refining / processing** | not published separately; the dominant stage (indicative) | – | salt roasting at high temperature with sodium salts, leaching, precipitation, and aluminothermic or electric reduction to ferrovanadium | Roasting fuel and chemicals dominate. Co-product slag route shares blast furnace and converter emissions with steel; how these are allocated changes results a lot | content_v2 chain; indicative |
| **Movement** | minor (indicative) | – | shipping V2O5 and ferrovanadium in drums and bags | High value per tonne keeps freight small | indicative |
| **Usage** | not applicable for steel; flow batteries enable renewables | – | No direct emissions in use; the metal sits inside steel or alloys for decades. | Vanadium redox flow batteries store solar and wind power for long durations, and V-microalloyed rebar cuts steel tonnage | USGS MCS 2026 |
| **Recycling / end of life** | lower than primary (no sourced figure) | – | reprocessing spent catalysts, petroleum residues and fly ash | US secondary output was about 7,500 t V in 2025; EU end-of-life recycling input is only 1-6%; flow-battery electrolyte can be reused almost fully (indicative) | USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM 2023 |

#### Other environmental impacts

Salt roasting releases HCl, Cl2 and SO2 and makes sodium-rich leach residues; V2O5 dust is toxic to workers (indicative).

#### Levers to cut emissions

- Recover more vanadium from steel slag, spent catalysts and fly ash (US secondary 7,500 t in 2025)
- Replace salt roasting with calcium roasting or direct leaching, which cuts acid gas and residue (indicative)
- Use low-carbon power and heat at roasting and reduction plants
- Lease and reuse flow-battery electrolyte instead of selling it

#### India

India's vanadium output is negligible (about 0.04% of world, 2024) and its steel mills import ferrovanadium, so India's footprint is embodied in imports, chiefly Chinese co-product (World Mining Data; content_v2).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
