# Vanadium: Production

Why China and Russia control nearly nine-tenths

Vanadium is highly concentrated. China supplied 69% of 2024 output and Russia 19%, giving an HHI of 5,127. South Africa and Brazil make up most of the rest. World output rose about 6% between 2020 and 2024, to 113,000 tonnes (World Mining Data). USGS gives a higher 118,000 tonnes for 2024, after a big revision to China. It estimates 110,000 tonnes in 2025, as South Africa fell from 8,050 to about 5,000 tonnes. Because most vanadium comes from steel slag, its output follows Chinese steel more than vanadium prices.

India's vanadium output is negligible, about 0.04% of world production in 2024 (World Mining Data), and its steel industry imports ferrovanadium. Vanadium is on India's 2023 critical minerals list. No Indian producer volumes were found.
