# Bioethanol: Overview

Why governments, not drivers, create almost all demand

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Bioethanol is ethyl alcohol made by fermenting sugars from cane, molasses or starch from maize, rice and wheat, then distilling and drying it to over 99.5%. The world made about 121 billion litres (about 96 Mt) of fuel ethanol in 2025, led by the US (52%), Brazil (27%) and India (8%). Most is blended into petrol at 10-30%. India reached E20 in 2025 and now runs mainly on maize and surplus FCI rice after barring sugar-based ethanol from its 2026-27 tender. Life-cycle savings range from about 30% (maize with land-use change) to 70% (cane) against petrol.
Volume about 121 billion litres (about 96 Mt) of fuel ethanol in 2025; about 139 billion litres of ethanol for all uses in 2024 Market value about $60-70 billion a year (indicative, basis: 121 billion litres x $0.50-0.60 per litre) Growth 4.4% a year in 2021-2025 (27.0 to 32.0 billion US gallons, derived from RFA); India supplied most of the growth RFA (2026); UFOP Supply Report 2026 (all-use ethanol 2024); value indicative

#### Key uses

| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Road fuel: low blends (E10-E30) and hydrous E100 in Brazil** | 86% | about 119 billion litres (2024)basis | Ethanol raises octane (RON about 108), adds oxygen and is the only renewable liquid that blends into petrol at scale with existing cars. Mandates (US RFS, Brazil E30, India E20, EU RED) create almost all the demand. RFA 2026; UFOP 2026 (derived) | Electric vehicles MTBE and other octane boosters Methanol blending (China M15) CNG and CBG |
| **Potable alcohol (spirits, country liquor)** | 7% | about 10 billion litresbasis | Neutral spirit from molasses, grain or cane goes into whisky, vodka, rum and Indian-made foreign liquor. In India, states tax and allocate molasses between potable and fuel use. indicative | None at scale |
| **Industrial solvent, pharma, sanitisers and personal care** | 5% | about 7 billion litresbasis | Ethanol is a cheap, low-toxicity solvent for drugs, extracts, inks, perfumes and hand rub. India imports denatured ethanol (HS 220720) for these uses: 0.68 Mt worth $471 million in 2024 (UN Comtrade). UN Comtrade 2024 HS 220720; share indicative | Isopropanol Methanol Ethyl acetate |
| **Chemical feedstock: ethyl acetate, bio-ethylene, bio-MEG, alcohol-to-jet SAF** | 2% | about 3 billion litresbasis | Ethanol can be dehydrated to ethylene (about 1.7 t ethanol per t, ethylene tile) for bio-polyethylene (Braskem) or bio-MEG (India Glycols), or upgraded to jet fuel. Cost limits it to premium green markets. ethylene tile; share indicative | Fossil ethylene HEFA SAF |

Fuel share derived from RFA fuel ethanol (31.36 billion gallons, 2024) against UFOP all-use ethanol (about 139 billion litres, 2024). Non-fuel shares are indicative.

#### From raw material to user

1. **Feedstock** US maize (141 Mt to ethanol in 2025/26, about a third of the crop, maize tile), Brazilian cane and corn, Indian maize, FCI rice, cane juice and molasses, EU maize, wheat and beet.
2. **Pre-treatment** Cane juice or molasses is fermented directly; grain is milled and its starch converted to glucose with enzymes (dry-grind).
3. **Fermentation** Yeast turns glucose into ethanol and CO2 over 40-60 hours; about 0.51 kg ethanol per kg glucose in theory, about 90-93% of that in practice (indicative).
4. **Distillation and dehydration** Distillation gives about 95% hydrous ethanol; molecular sieves dry it to over 99.5% anhydrous ethanol for blending (indicative).
5. **Co-products** Grain plants sell distillers grains (about 15-17 lb per 56-lb bushel, maize tile), corn oil and CO2; cane mills burn bagasse for power and return vinasse to fields.
6. **Blending and retail** Oil marketing companies blend at depots; India's OMCs contracted 1,048 crore litres for ESY 2025-26 (Autocar Pro, Sep 2026).

#### Three things to know

- The US, Brazil and India made 87% of the world's 32.0 billion gallons (121 billion litres) of fuel ethanol in 2025 (RFA).
- India's ESY 2025-26 supply to end-August 2026 was 70% grain: 345 crore litres from maize, 214 crore litres from FCI rice and 64 crore litres from damaged grain (Autocar Pro, Sep 2026).
- EU default values put cane ethanol at 70% and maize ethanol at 40-48% below petrol's 94 g CO2e/MJ, before indirect land-use change (RED II Annex V).
