# Ambient heat: Impact on nature

Clean at the source; the electricity and refrigerants matter

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/energy/e_ambient/nature/

What this tab covers What taking energy from this source does to land, water, air and climate, wildlife and ecosystems, with life-cycle emissions and land use where measured.

Extracting ambient heat has almost no direct effect on nature; the impacts come from the electricity used and from refrigerant leaks. Even on fossil-heavy grids, heat pumps usually cut emissions compared with boilers.

#### Effects on nature

| Area | Effect | Size | How it is reduced |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Climate (electricity)** | Emissions depend on the power mix driving the compressor.^[5](https://www.iea.org/reports/the-future-of-heat-pumps/executive-summary) | At least 20% lower than a gas boiler even on emissions-intensive power; up to 80% lower on cleaner grids | Low-carbon electricity, better insulation |
| **Climate (global picture)** | Life-cycle comparison across world regions.^[11](https://ore.exeter.ac.uk/repository/handle/10871/41003) | Electric cars and heat pumps are less emission-intensive than fossil alternatives in 53 of 59 regions, which make up 95% of global transport and heating demand | Decarbonise the remaining coal-heavy grids |
| **Refrigerants** | Many units use fluorinated gases (HFCs) that are strong greenhouse gases if they leak.^[12](https://heatpumpingtechnologies.org/?p=59473) | EU bans F-gases with GWP above 150 in self-contained (including monobloc) heat pumps up to 50 kW from 2027 and all F-gases in small monobloc units (under 12 kW) from 2032; HFC consumption fully phased out by 2050 | Low-GWP and natural refrigerants (such as hydrocarbons), leak checks, recovery at end of life |
| **Land and ground** | Ground loops need trenches or boreholes; vertical loops use less land.^[3](https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/guide_to_geothermal_heat_pumps.pdf) | Horizontal trenches at least about 1.2 m (4 ft) deep; lake coils at least 2.4 m (8 ft) down | Vertical boreholes in dense areas |
| **Energy system** | Replaces combustion in buildings, removing local air pollution and fuel imports.^[9](https://www.ehpa.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/EHPA-Market-Report-2025-executive-summary.pdf) | Europe's installed base avoids about 21 billion m3 of gas imports | |

The ambient heat itself is free of emissions; what matters is the electricity that drives the pump and the refrigerant inside it. Because a heat pump delivers two to four units of heat for each unit of electricity, it beats a gas boiler on emissions in most of the world even before the grid is decarbonised. A meaningful single g CO2e/kWh figure does not exist, since it depends on the local power mix and climate.

Refrigerant leakage is the main direct hazard, and EU regulation is moving equipment towards low-GWP and natural refrigerants. Ground-source systems disturb soil during installation but leave little lasting footprint once the loops are buried.
