# CNG, LPG and biogas distribution: Efficiency and losses

Hauling heavy steel, and the methane that leaks from digesters

Losses come less from leaks than from hauling heavy containers and from energy spent compressing gas. Biogas plants can leak methane, which matters for the climate.

LPG sits in sealed pressure vessels, so it does not boil off the way LNG does; the main energy costs are fuel for ships and trucks and the work of bottling. CNG is bulky: even with light composite cylinders, gas is only about a third of the loaded weight of a tube module, and each trailer returns with some gas still in it.

For biogas, the weak point is methane escaping from digesters, storage and upgrading units. The IEA puts the average at about 6% of plant output, enough to erase much of the climate benefit at a badly run plant.
