# Coal transport: Technology advances

Heavier trains, enclosed conveyors and sprays that keep dust down

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/energy/e_coal_transport/advances/

What this tab covers The newest technologies in service or close to adoption, what each improves, and how the main options compare.

Coal transport is mature and shrinking in the West, so change is incremental: heavier trains, enclosed conveyors, dust suppression and more rail links from Mongolia to China.

#### Latest advances
**20,000-tonne heavy-haul trains** in service · 2025 (about 51 of about 82 daily Daqin trains)

Long trains with locomotives spread through the consist under radio control^[5](https://www.railjournal.com/freight/chinese-heavy-haul-coal-traffic-plateaus/)^[6](https://en.sxcoal.com/news/detail/2052267825682817026)

*Improves:* More tonnes per crew and train path
**Closed pipe conveyors from mine to plant** in service · 2021 to 2025

Belts rolled into a tube: 6.43 km at 500 t/h at Chandrapur and 15.33 km at 1,200 t/h feeding Koradi and Khaperkheda (India)^[15](https://www.freepressjournal.in/amp/sustainability-network/mahagenco-modernises-coal-transport-with-closed-pipe-conveyor-network)

*Improves:* Replace trucks; cut dust, congestion and coal loss
**Topping agents (surfactant sprays)** in service · BNSF tariff; 1,633 treated trains in a 2010 trial

Chemical crust sprayed on loaded wagons^[13](https://kuow.org/post/coal-dust-trains-adds-pollution-new-research-finds)^[14](https://sightline.org/2014/02/20/dust-up)

*Improves:* Less coal dust along the line
**Mongolia to China cross-border coal** being deployed · 2026 (exports up over 50% to about 91 Mt)

Rising rail exports of coking coal^[1](https://www.iea.org/reports/coal-mid-year-update-2026/trade)

*Improves:* Shorter haul than seaborne supply to North China
**Coal log pipelines** research · 1990s development; not commercialised

Compressed coal cylinders pumped in water^[11](https://www.osti.gov/biblio/430509)

*Improves:* About four parts coal to one part water, roughly a quarter of a slurry's water (calculated)

#### Comparing the options

| Option | Efficiency | Cost | Capacity or distance | Maturity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Unit train**^[10](https://nationalwaterwaysfoundation.org/file/43/Final%202022%20NWF%20TTI%20study%20press%20release.pdf)^[3](https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=64564)^[5](https://www.railjournal.com/freight/chinese-heavy-haul-coal-traffic-plateaus/) | 472 ton-miles per gallon (0.8 to 1.1% of coal energy per 1,000 km, calculated) | US average USD 18.77 per short ton (2023, all modes) | 390 Mt a year on one 653 km line (Daqin) | mature |
| **Capesize or Panamax ship**^[8](https://www.breakwaveadvisors.com/insights/2026/2/27/panamax-freight-view-on-indonesian-thermal-coal-flows)^[22](https://nyk.com/english/ir/financial/shipping) | lowest fuel per tonne-km (not quantified in sources) | about USD 10 per tonne, Western Australia to Qingdao (February 2026) | about 182,000 or 82,000 t per voyage | mature |
| **River barge**^[10](https://nationalwaterwaysfoundation.org/file/43/Final%202022%20NWF%20TTI%20study%20press%20release.pdf) | 675 ton-miles per gallon | not found in sources | 15-barge tow equals 216 rail cars | mature |
| **Truck**^[10](https://nationalwaterwaysfoundation.org/file/43/Final%202022%20NWF%20TTI%20study%20press%20release.pdf)^[3](https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=64564) | 151 ton-miles per gallon | USD 8.50 to 13.05 per ton, Northern Appalachia to Pennsylvania (2022-2023) | about 1/1,050 of a barge tow | mature |
| **Slurry pipeline**^[12](https://clui.org/ludb/site/black-mesa-coal-mine-and-pipeline)^[20](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2004-12-01/pdf/04-26439.pdf) | about 1 m3 water per tonne, plus drying | not found in sources | about 4.8 million short tons a year (Black Mesa) | largely abandoned |

Unit trains are the standard for long hauls over land, ships between countries, and barges where rivers run the right way. Trucks win only on short or irregular routes; pipe conveyors (500 to 1,200 t/h in the Indian examples) on fixed routes of a few to tens of kilometres. Slurry pipelines faded over water demand and reliance on one customer. Modal fuel figures come from a waterways-industry-commissioned study.
