# Fusion reactors: Impact on the biosphere

No runaway risk, but plenty of activated metal to manage

What this tab covers Effects on human, animal, plant, fungal and microbial life and on whole ecosystems: in the short term (construction and early years), medium term (operating life) and long term (decommissioning and legacy).

Fusion cannot run away like a fission chain reaction and leaves no long-lived high-level waste, but it produces large volumes of neutron-activated material and handles radioactive tritium. With no operating power plants, impacts on wildlife are unstudied.
Life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions (2001 design-study estimate) about 9 g CO2e/kWh^[11](https://ans.org/pubs/journals/fst/article-42694) Fuel in the ITER vessel at any moment less than 4 g^[16](https://www.iter.org/node/18402) Dose to most exposed public in normal ITER operation about 1/1000 of natural background^[16](https://www.iter.org/node/18402) Time for activated materials to become recyclable about 100 years^[16](https://www.iter.org/node/18402)

#### Effects over time

| Life affected | Short term | Medium term | Long term |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Humans**^[16](https://www.iter.org/node/18402)^[20](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.05993) | Construction impacts typical of a large industrial site. | In normal ITER operation the dose to the most exposed neighbours is about one thousand times less than natural background; even a tritium plant fire would not require evacuation. A runaway reaction is impossible. | Most activated isotopes have half-lives under 10 years and materials should be recyclable after about 100 years, but waste volumes are expected to be far larger than from fission. |
| **Animals**^[20](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.05993) | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect; no operating plants to study. Tritium release is the main pathway of concern. | Little evidence of effect. |
| **Plants**^[20](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.05993) | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect. |
| **Fungi and soil life**^[20](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.05993) | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect. |
| **Ecosystems**^[11](https://ans.org/pubs/journals/fst/article-42694)^[12](https://www.iter.org/facts-figures)^[20](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.05993) | Site clearance (ITER 180 hectares) and mining of lithium and beryllium. | If commercialised, low life-cycle emissions (about 9 g CO2e/kWh in a 2001 design study) would displace fossil generation. | Land and water impacts are not well understood; researchers warn that claims of a perfectly benign source lack critical analysis. |

#### How the effects are reduced

Designers limit tritium inventory and use layered barriers to keep it inside buildings. Low-activation steels and avoiding long-lived isotopes allow activated parts to be recycled within about a century. Researchers call for early life-cycle and social assessments before plants are built.
