# Industrial heat pumps and vapour recompression: Engineering and integration

Source, sink and grid must all line up at once

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/energy/e_industrial_hp/rc-eng/

What this tab covers Engineering and operating integration: how tightly it is coupled to the host process, how steady the waste stream is, and how hard it is to retrofit.

Heat pumps link a waste-heat source, a process sink and the power grid, so integration design and grid connection matter as much as the machine.

#### Process interdependence (coupling risk)
Mixed

A heat pump needs its source and its sink running at once; if the waste stream stops, so does the useful heat. Most sites therefore keep the existing boiler as backup. MVR is built into the evaporator, so a compressor trip stops evaporation unless steam backup is fitted. Electrification moves dependence from the gas network to the grid, and grid connection can be the bottleneck: the Netherlands has released 40% of peak grid capacity for new connections, giving priority to users who can offer flexibility.^[6](https://www.iea.org/commentaries/can-low-temperature-heat-in-factories-be-electrified-competitively)

#### Load factor and intermittency
Mixed

Heat pumps cost more to buy than boilers and save on running costs, so they need long, steady hours. Hybrid set-ups that add thermal storage to existing gas boilers, charging with electricity when power is cheap, can pay back the extra capital in about five years in Germany. MVR is best for evaporators running round the clock; the dairy study modelled 7,920 hours a year.^[6](https://www.iea.org/commentaries/can-low-temperature-heat-in-factories-be-electrified-competitively)^[8](https://mdpi-res.com/d_attachment/processes/processes-12-00209/article_deploy/processes-12-00209.pdf)

#### Footprint and retrofit complexity
Mixed

Units range from about 20 kW to 20 MW. The IEA sees about 15 GW of potential across about 3,000 European paper, food and chemical plants, an average of about 5 MW each (calculated). One built example is the 20 hectare Fenland glasshouse in England, where four ammonia heat pumps totalling 33 MW draw heat from irrigation water stored in ponds (an ambient source, not industrial waste heat; supplier case story). Retrofits need a heat-integration study to place the heat pump correctly, space near both source and sink, and often a larger grid connection.^[2](https://ideas.repec.org/a/eee/energy/v152y2018icp985-1010.html)^[3](https://www.iea.org/reports/the-future-of-heat-pumps/executive-summary)^[14](https://www.alfalaval.com/media/stories/industrial-heat-pumps/fenland-glasshouse-a-greenhouse-heated-by-industrial-heat-pumps/)
