# Lithium iron phosphate batteries: Economics

Why the same battery costs USD 125 or USD 334 per kWh

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/energy/e_li_lfp/sg-econ/

What this tab covers Economics and financial structure: capital versus operating cost, levelised cost of storage, and how the asset earns money.

LFP is the cheapest battery storage to build, but quoted costs range from about USD 70 per kWh (battery pack only) to over USD 330 per kWh (complete US project), and that gap drives very different storage costs by market.

#### Capex versus opex
Favourable

BloombergNEF found that stationary storage packs averaged USD 70/kWh in 2025, down 45% in a year and the cheapest of any segment. Ember puts a complete grid-connected system outside China and the US at about USD 125/kWh, of which about USD 75 is equipment shipped from China and about USD 50 is installation and grid connection. NREL's 2024 US figure for a 4-hour system is USD 334/kWh, which reflects US labour, tariffs and project costs. Cells make up around half of a project's capex, according to Energy-Storage.news. NREL sets yearly fixed operating cost at 4% of capex, which includes augmentation.^[1](https://about.bnef.com/insights/clean-energy/lithium-ion-battery-pack-prices-fall-to-108-per-kilowatt-hour-despite-rising-metal-prices-bloombergnef/)^[6](https://atb.nlr.gov/electricity/2025/utility-scale_battery_storage)^[7](https://docs.nrel.gov/docs/fy25osti/93281.pdf)^[8](https://www.energy-storage.news/lazard-us-utility-scale-energy-storage-lcos-has-increased-since-restrictions-on-chinese-cells-came-into-force/)^[9](https://ember-energy.org/latest-updates/batteries-now-cheap-enough-to-deliver-solar-when-it-is-needed/)

#### Levelised cost of storage
Favourable

Levelised cost of storage (LCOS) spreads all lifetime costs over the MWh delivered. Ember calculates about USD 65/MWh for long-duration (4 hour plus) projects outside China and the US in 2025. Lazard's 2026 US benchmark for a 100 MW, 4-hour plant is USD 210 to 292/MWh unsubsidised (USD 215 to 414 for 2 hours), using capex of USD 270 to 365/kWh; its 2025 edition gave USD 115 to 254 (as reported by Energy-Storage.news), and the rise reflects tariffs and foreign-entity rules that restrict cheaper Chinese cells. India's auctions price storage as a monthly capacity charge instead: the lowest 2-hour tariff in 2025 was INR 1.48 lakh (about USD 1,576) per MW per month, well below the INR 2.3 lakh that IEEFA and JMK Research estimate a 2-hour, two-cycle project needs to be viable; they place nearly three-quarters of the 10.4 GW of 2-hour capacity allocated in 2025 in an at-risk category.^[8](https://www.energy-storage.news/lazard-us-utility-scale-energy-storage-lcos-has-increased-since-restrictions-on-chinese-cells-came-into-force/)^[9](https://ember-energy.org/latest-updates/batteries-now-cheap-enough-to-deliver-solar-when-it-is-needed/)^[20](https://www.lazard.com/media/kcfconhf/lazards-lcoeplus_vf.pdf)^[21](https://ieefa.org/resources/viability-standalone-battery-energy-storage-tariffs-discovered-2025)

#### Revenue stack and market participation
Favourable

LFP suits daily cycling: buying cheap midday solar and selling into the evening peak (arbitrage), plus capacity payments and fast frequency response. Ember estimates that shifting half of daytime solar output into the night adds about USD 33/MWh, making round-the-clock solar about USD 76/MWh. NREL's 4-hour plant cycles about once a day, a 16.7% capacity factor. As more batteries join, frequency service prices tend to fall first, so long-term returns lean on arbitrage and capacity contracts. In India, many 2025 awards were 2-hour, two-cycle-a-day contracts in which a state utility pays a fixed monthly charge per MW, often with central viability gap funding; an NVVN tender for 500 MW/1,000 MWh in Rajasthan cleared at INR 2.16 to 2.19 lakh per MW per month in June 2025. Fixed capacity contracts remove merchant price risk but squeeze margins when bids are aggressive.^[6](https://atb.nlr.gov/electricity/2025/utility-scale_battery_storage)^[9](https://ember-energy.org/latest-updates/batteries-now-cheap-enough-to-deliver-solar-when-it-is-needed/)^[22](https://www.ess-news.com/2025/06/25/indian-1-gwh-battery-storage-tender-yields-lowest-tariffs-to-date/)
