# Nickel-rich lithium-ion batteries: Science and technology

How more nickel means more range, and shorter life

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/energy/e_li_nmc/sg-sci/

What this tab covers The physics and chemistry: how the energy is stored, which materials it needs (scarcity, toxicity, recyclability) and what makes it age.

NMC and NCA pack more energy into each kilogram by using layered nickel-rich cathodes, at the price of cobalt and nickel exposure and shorter life. LTO swaps the graphite anode for lithium titanate, trading energy density for very fast charging and long life.

#### Mechanism
Mixed

All three are intercalation batteries: lithium ions slot into and out of host crystals as the cell charges and discharges. NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) and NCA (nickel cobalt aluminium) use a layered oxide cathode; raising the nickel share raises energy density, which is why they lead in long-range cars, with NMC cells reaching about 265 Wh/kg against about 205 Wh/kg for LFP. LTO (lithium titanate) replaces graphite with a titanate anode that barely changes size as lithium enters, and runs at a voltage where metallic lithium does not deposit; it can be paired with an NMC or LFP cathode but runs at a low cell voltage (about 2.3 V per cell), so it stores much less energy: Toshiba's 23 Ah SCiB cell works out at about 96 Wh/kg (calculated: 23 Ah x 2.3 V / 0.55 kg, from the company catalogue).^[2](https://iea.org/reports/global-ev-outlook-2026/electric-vehicle-batteries)^[15](https://www.tipsh.toshiba.com.cn/en/file/Catalogue-SCib_en.pdf)

#### Material scarcity and toxicity
Unfavourable

Cobalt is roughly 15% of the metal content in NCA and about 10% in NMC721 and NMC811. The Democratic Republic of Congo supplies almost two-thirds of cobalt; it banned cobalt exports in February 2025 and switched to quotas from 16 October 2025, and cobalt prices doubled over the following year. Indonesia produced almost 45% of refined nickel in 2024, though Indonesian firms own only about 10% of global output, and China refines over three-quarters of cobalt. The cathode is 40 to 50% of NMC cell cost against 25 to 30% for LFP, so metal prices move NMC costs more. Cobalt and nickel compounds are toxic and artisanal cobalt mining has documented labour abuses, which is why EU due diligence rules cover cobalt and nickel (alongside lithium and natural graphite).^[2](https://iea.org/reports/global-ev-outlook-2026/electric-vehicle-batteries)^[5](https://www.iea.org/reports/global-critical-minerals-outlook-2025)^[8](https://www.iea.org/policies/16763-eu-sustainable-batteries-regulation)

#### Degradation and ageing

Layered nickel oxides slowly lose structure, release oxygen and shed metal into the electrolyte, which in turn speeds lithium loss at the graphite anode; the 2020 US grid assessment blamed this cathode dissolution and the linked anode capacity loss for NMC's shorter life, about 1,200 cycles at 80% depth of discharge against about 2,000 for LFP on the same basis. Higher nickel makes this worse unless coatings and dopants are used. LTO avoids lithium plating and anode swelling and lasts far longer: Toshiba reports its 20 Ah SCiB cell keeps at least 70% of capacity after 20,000 full cycles at a high (3C) rate at 25 C, and that it can be cycled at -30 C. These are manufacturer figures, not independent tests.
