# Oil and product pipelines: Impact on the biosphere

Spills into rivers, leaks into aquifers and cleared corridors

What this tab covers Effects on human, animal, plant, fungal and microbial life and on whole ecosystems: in the short term (construction and early years), medium term (operating life) and long term (decommissioning and legacy).

Building a pipeline clears a long strip of land. Once it runs, the main risks are leaks and spills into rivers and groundwater, and in some regions theft and sabotage. Most US pipeline deaths happen on gas lines; oil lines mainly harm water, soil and wildlife.

#### Effects over time

| Life affected | Short term | Medium term | Long term |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Humans**^[2](https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/2025-05-07_R44201_0c6a72e5a4eab76953162d263010f08eee1dcc67.html) | Construction traffic, noise and disputes over land and Indigenous consent | Drinking-water contamination from leaks (a Bucks County, Pennsylvania jet fuel line leaked for 16 months into a local aquifer, 2025); fires at illegal taps in Nigeria | Old lines left in the ground; contaminated sites needing long clean-up |
| **Animals**^[2](https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/2025-05-07_R44201_0c6a72e5a4eab76953162d263010f08eee1dcc67.html) | Disturbance and trench barriers during construction | Oiled birds, fish and mammals after river and coastal spills (Kalamazoo 2010, Refugio 2015) | Lasting sediment contamination in spill-hit rivers |
| **Plants**^[2](https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/2025-05-07_R44201_0c6a72e5a4eab76953162d263010f08eee1dcc67.html) | Forest and scrub cleared along the right of way | Vegetation killed where oil soaks into soil; the cleared strip is kept free of trees | Partial recovery after reinstatement; trees not replanted over the pipe |
| **Fungi and soil life**^[2](https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/2025-05-07_R44201_0c6a72e5a4eab76953162d263010f08eee1dcc67.html) | Topsoil stripped and mixed during trenching | Oil-soaked soils lose much of their life; some microbes break down hydrocarbons | Little evidence of effect beyond spill sites |
| **Ecosystems**^[2](https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/2025-05-07_R44201_0c6a72e5a4eab76953162d263010f08eee1dcc67.html) | Habitat cut into strips along the route | River and wetland spills (Mill Creek, Kansas, 2022; Yellowstone River, 2011) | Fragmentation lasts as long as the corridor is kept clear |

#### How the effects are reduced

Impacts are reduced by routing away from rivers and aquifers, drilling under watercourses, coatings and cathodic protection, frequent in-line inspection, automatic shut-off valves and leak detection that compares volumes in and out. Spill kits staged near river crossings help, and topsoil is stored separately during construction. Against theft and war damage, the tools are patrols, rapid repair crews and spare routes such as Croatia's Adria line for Druzhba customers.
