# Organic Rankine, Kalina and sCO2 cycles: Engineering and integration

Skid-mounted, unattended and happy at part load

Source page: https://www.materialinsights.org/energy/e_orc/rc-eng/

What this tab covers Engineering and operating integration: how tightly it is coupled to the host process, how steady the waste stream is, and how hard it is to retrofit.

ORCs are usually decoupled from the host by a thermal-oil loop, need little attention and no water, and hold efficiency at part load, which suits fluctuating heat.

#### Process interdependence (coupling risk)
Favourable

Because heat is taken through an oil or hot-water loop, the host process can run with the ORC offline; the loop simply diverts or the gas bypasses the recovery exchanger. The bigger coupling risk is the reverse: if the host changes its process, the heat supply changes. Turboden's 2010 figures for its Admont biomass unit showed availability above 98% after more than 50,000 operating hours, with about 3-5 hours of maintenance a week (company figures, dated).^[4](https://task33.ieabioenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/33/2022/07/06Bini-Turboden.pdf)

#### Load factor and intermittency
Favourable

ORC turbines can run down to about 10% of rated power with good efficiency, so they cope with batch furnaces and fluctuating kiln gas better than steam turbines. The Riyadh Cement plant is expected to make nearly 80 GWh a year from 13 MW, about 6,150 full-load hours (calculated). DOE notes that waste heat can be continuous, cyclic or intermittent and that variability must be assessed site by site.^[1](https://betterbuildingssolutioncenter.energy.gov/sites/default/files/attachments/Waste_Heat_to_Power_Fact_Sheet.pdf)^[2](https://www.cemnet.com/News/story/182242/turboden-commissions-13mw-waste-heat-power-plant-at-riyadh-cement.html)^[4](https://task33.ieabioenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/33/2022/07/06Bini-Turboden.pdf)

#### Footprint and retrofit complexity
Favourable

Standard ORC turbogenerators come as skids from about 200 kW to 3 MW, with custom units up to 10 MW and biomass units up to 12 MWe; that modularity simplifies brownfield fit. Turboden describes its cement output as water-free, which matters on dry sites. The sCO2 pilot shows the attraction of very compact turbomachinery, spinning at 27,000 rpm, but it cost USD 169 million for a 10 MW test facility and is not yet a retrofit product. Exergy offers heat-recovery turbine frames of 2.5, 5 and 10 MW and says a gas turbine of about 5 MW paired with an ORC can deliver 7-8 MW in total (company figures, 2019). In India, the Pune start-up HrimTron is testing a 55-520 kWe ORC turbine in steel and waste plants and claims it is 30-40% cheaper than imported systems (company claim, early stage).^[3](https://www.turboden.com/company/media/press/press-reviews/5084/enhancing-energy-security-and-sustainability-in-cement-plants-through-turboden-orc-technology)^[4](https://task33.ieabioenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/33/2022/07/06Bini-Turboden.pdf)^[5](https://bioenergyinternational.com/turboden-reflects-300th-biomass-orc-milestone/)^[7](https://www.swri.org/press-release/step-demo-pilot-plant-achieves-full-operational-conditions-phase-1-of-testing)^[14](https://www.powerprogress.com/news/heat-recovery-in-oil-gas-applications/7008064.article)^[15](https://frontiertech.niti.gov.in/story/this-turbine-converts-waste-heat-from-factories-into-electricity-and-is-cheaper-than-its-competitors/)
