# Tankers, barges and fuel trucks: Technology advances

Record orders, LNG-ready hulls and satellites tracking shadow fleets

What this tab covers The newest technologies in service or close to adoption, what each improves, and how the main options compare.

Tanker technology changes slowly. The 2026 story is record ordering, mostly at Chinese yards, a small but growing share of ships able to burn alternative fuels, safer rail tank cars and satellite tracking of the shadow fleet.

#### Latest advances
**Record crude tanker ordering** being deployed · 2026, deliveries to 2030

60 million dwt (234 ships, 151 VLCCs) contracted in 2026; orderbook 27% of the fleet^[6](https://indiaseatradenews.com/crude-tanker-newbuilding-orders-hit-record-60-million-dwt-in-2026-bimco/)

*Improves:* Replaces an ageing fleet (22% of crude tankers are over 20 years old)
**Alternative-fuel and retrofit-ready tankers** being deployed · 2026

9% of the orderbook will use alternative fuels (mainly LNG) and 30% is retrofit-ready^[6](https://indiaseatradenews.com/crude-tanker-newbuilding-orders-hit-record-60-million-dwt-in-2026-bimco/)

*Improves:* Path to lower CO2 per tonne-mile
**DOT-117 rail tank cars** being deployed · 2025 to 2029

Thicker shells, thermal protection, head shields; CPC-1232 cars out of crude and ethanol service from 1 May 2025^[19](https://www.bts.gov/newsroom/phaseout-deadline-older-tank-car-types-pass-number-safer-tank-cars-continues-increasing)

*Improves:* Fewer punctures and fires in derailments
**Inert gas systems** in service · standard

Cleaned exhaust blown into cargo tanks^[3](https://www.nyk.com/english/stories/01/04/20250718.html)

*Improves:* Prevents tank explosions
**Satellite and AIS tracking of the shadow fleet** in service · 2023 to 2026

AIS and satellite data matched to sanctions lists: 862 shadow-fleet tankers have carried Russian oil since 2023, 695 of them active since May 2025^[12](https://sanctions.kse.ua/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/22.-KSE_shadow_fleet_remaining_targets_JUN26.pdf)

*Improves:* Helps enforce sanctions and identify old, poorly insured ships

#### Comparing the options

| Option | Efficiency | Cost | Capacity or distance | Maturity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **VLCC (crude)**^[3](https://www.nyk.com/english/stories/01/04/20250718.html)^[4](https://thundersaidenergy.com/downloads/oil-tankers-the-economics/) | about 0.6 to 1.6% of cargo energy per Gulf to Japan round trip (calculated) | about USD 2 per barrel Gulf to China in normal markets | about 2 million barrels per voyage | mature |
| **Rail tank car (unit train)**^[21](https://nationalwaterwaysfoundation.org/file/43/Final%202022%20NWF%20TTI%20study%20press%20release.pdf)^[23](https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=7270)^[20](https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_railna_dc_nus-nus_mbbl_a.htm) | 472 ton-miles per gallon | USD 10 to 15 per barrel US (EIA, 2012) | about 222,000 b/d US average in 2025 (calculated) | mature |
| **River barge**^[21](https://nationalwaterwaysfoundation.org/file/43/Final%202022%20NWF%20TTI%20study%20press%20release.pdf) | 675 ton-miles per gallon | not found in sources | 15-barge tow equals 216 rail cars or 1,050 trucks | mature |
| **Road tanker**^[21](https://nationalwaterwaysfoundation.org/file/43/Final%202022%20NWF%20TTI%20study%20press%20release.pdf)^[22](https://www.army.mil/article/46504) | 151 ton-miles per gallon | highest per km; US Army put fully burdened war-zone fuel at USD 20 to 1,000 per gallon (2010) | one compartmented truck | mature |

At sea there is no real alternative to tankers. On land, pipelines are cheaper for steady volumes; rail can be added quickly, which is why US crude-by-rail peaked when pipelines were full and has shrunk since. Barges beat rail on fuel per tonne-mile and trucks are least efficient. The modal fuel figures come from a study commissioned by a waterways industry body.
