#### Follow one offering through the chain

**2** Example story · 6 steps · India

### A modular wardrobe fitted in an Indian flat

Follow a factory-made wardrobe from plantation-wood board to the bedroom of a new apartment.

 1 / 6 · Materials and components

#### Carcass panels pressed from MDF
**21%**Greenpanel share of Indian MDF, 2024

The wardrobe's carcass and shutters are cut from medium-density fibreboard or plywood. MDF makers chip plantation wood, refine it to fibre, mix it with urea-formaldehyde resin and press it into boards. Greenpanel, with about 21% of India's MDF market in March 2024, then had 660,000 cubic metres a year of capacity and was adding a 231,000 cubic metre plant (ICRA).^[1](https://icra.in/Rating/GetRationalReportFilePdf?id=130327)
**Constraint** Timber prices rose sharply in 2023-24 and cheaper MDF imports from Vietnam and Thailand squeezed Indian panel makers' margins (ICRA). 2 / 6 · Materials and components

#### Faced with decorative laminate
**24.5 mn**Greenlam laminate sheets a year, FY25

The boards are faced with high-pressure laminate: layers of kraft paper soaked in phenolic resin, topped with a printed decor sheet and melamine, and pressed hot into a hard, washable skin. Greenlam had capacity for 24.52 million laminate sheets a year in FY25 across four Indian plants, and sells in more than 120 countries.^[2](https://www.greenlamindustries.com/pdf-file/greenlam-result-presentation-Q4-FY25.pdf)
**Constraint** Laminate costs track phenol and melamine, which follow crude oil and natural gas prices, so petrochemical swings reach the wardrobe. 3 / 6 · Materials and components

#### Hinges and runners from Indore
**60 mn**hinges a year from Hettich Indore

Soft-close hinges, drawer runners and lift systems decide how a wardrobe feels after years of daily use. Germany's Hettich has invested about Rs 2,000 crore in India; its Indore hinge unit makes about 60 million hinges a year, and a new plant opened there in March 2026 adds about 5 million undermount drawer runners a year.^[3](https://www.outlookbusiness.com/corporate/hettich-opens-new-indore-plant-eyes-india-as-key-global-manufacturing-hub)
**Constraint** Premium fittings come from a few European groups, and switching brand means requalifying fit and cycle life in every cabinet design. 4 / 6 · Manufacturing

#### Cut and edged on CNC lines
**US$ 22bn**India's furniture market (CSIL)

In a modular factory, CNC panel saws and nesting routers cut the boards from the design file, edge banders seal the cut edges and boring machines drill holes for the fittings, so the wardrobe arrives as a flat kit. This is a minority route: India's furniture market is about US$ 22 billion, fourth in the world, and still highly fragmented and largely unorganised (CSIL).^[4](https://www.gii.co.jp/report/csi1695947-furniture-industry-india.html)
**Constraint** Factories rely on imported German and Italian CNC lines and on accurate site measurements; one wrong dimension means remaking a panel. 5 / 6 · Logistics and compliance

#### ISI mark now compulsory
**2026**year the furniture ISI mark became compulsory

Since 13 February 2026, a quality control order has required makers and importers of work chairs, stools, tables, desks, beds and storage units such as wardrobes to carry the BIS ISI mark, under standards IS 17631 to IS 17636. Laboratories test strength, stability and durability, and factories must pass audits before they can sell.^[5](https://plyreporter.com/article/154327/current-issue)
**Constraint** Small workshops must pay for testing and audits to keep selling, and unmarked imports are shut out of the Indian market. 6 / 6 · Retail and installation

#### Designed in 3D, installed on site
**23%**Livspace revenue growth, FY25

Fit-out firms such as Livspace measure the flat, design the wardrobe in 3D software, order panels from factories and send installers to fit it. Livspace's revenue rose 23% to Rs 1,460 crore in FY25, and it says it has delivered over 120,000 rooms across more than 70 Indian cities and towns. Demand follows new apartment completions.^[6](https://www.business-standard.com/companies/news/livspace-revenue-rises-23-to-1-460-cr-in-fy25-losses-come-down-125101300850_1.html)
**Constraint** Site delays and measurement errors raise costs, and Livspace still reported an adjusted EBITDA loss of about Rs 131 crore in FY25. [Tm Timber](https://www.materialinsights.org/commodities/lumber/)[Adh Adhesives and sealants](https://www.materialinsights.org/chemicals/adhesives/)[Real estate](https://www.materialinsights.org/industries/real_estate/)[Software and IT services](https://www.materialinsights.org/industries/software_it/)

#### What the chain shows

The wardrobe shows furniture shifting from carpenters to factories; Indian-made boards, laminates and hinges are the opportunity, quality rules the new gate.
