Battery electrolytes and Vehicles, ships, rail, aircraft
The liquid electrolyte, a lithium salt (usually LiPF6) dissolved in carbonate solvents, lets lithium ions move between the electrodes of every EV cell. Chinese suppliers provide most of it, its salt has swung through sharp price cycles, and its flammability and toxic decomposition products make it central to EV fire safety.
Battery electrolytes (chemical) and Vehicles, ships, rail, aircraft (industry): 4 relationships.
How they are linked
1. Industry input
Physical flow · Strong · Electrolytes to vehicles, ships, rail, aircraft
A lithium-ion cell cannot work without a medium that carries lithium ions between anode and cathode, so every EV cell is filled with electrolyte; the site rates it 5 of 5 on criticality for EV battery cell and materials makers.
- 5 of 5 criticality for EV battery cell and materials makers
- about 1.29 Mt electrolyte in EV, PHEV and HEV batteries installed worldwide, January to November 2025
- 406 kt of that used outside China, up 31.9% on a year earlier
Because every cell is filled with electrolyte, EV battery output translates directly into electrolyte demand. Use outside China grew about 32% in the first eleven months of 2025 as cell production spread, but most of the material still comes from Chinese suppliers.

2. Chinese supply
Shared risk · Strong · Vehicle battery supply depends on Chinese electrolyte makers
Chinese firms built electrolyte and LiPF6 capacity at scale alongside China's cell industry, so cell makers worldwide buy most of their electrolyte from them.
- 86.4% Chinese companies' share of the EV electrolyte market, Q3 2025
- 8.8% and 4.8% Korean and Japanese companies' shares, Q3 2025
- 301 kt EV electrolyte supplied by Tinci, the largest supplier, January to November 2025
Korean and Japanese suppliers together held under 14% of the market in Q3 2025, so a carmaker seeking non-Chinese electrolyte has few large options. China's LiPF6 output reached about 187,000 tonnes in 2024, which shows how much of the salt supply sits there.

3. LiPF6 price cycles
Cost and price · Medium · Salt price swings pass into cell cost
LiPF6 is the specialised ingredient of the electrolyte, and its market swings between shortage and oversupply as capacity is added, moving cell costs for carmakers.
- about 62,000 to 64,000 yuan/t LiPF6 spot price in China at 31 December 2024, after historic lows that year
- 45% rise in China's LiPF6 output in 2024
Capacity growth turned the market to oversupply in 2024, pushing prices to historic lows even as output rose 45%, and smaller entrants took share from the leading firms. For vehicle makers this lowered battery material costs; SMM expected a slight surplus to continue into 2025.

4. Safety and alternatives
Substitution · Weak · Safer salts and solid electrolytes could replace LiPF6 liquids
The carbonate electrolyte is flammable and LiPF6 reacts with water to form hydrogen fluoride, so in a thermal runaway an EV battery can release flammable and toxic gases; this drives work on alternative salts and electrolytes.
- 50 to 120 mg/Wh hydrogen fluoride measured from burning lithium-ion cells in abuse tests
Swedish abuse tests found HF releases that the authors judged could pose a serious risk to people. Alternatives face demanding requirements in EV cells, which is why liquid LiPF6 electrolytes remain standard.

For investors
Key learnings
- Electrolyte demand tracks battery output closely, but Chinese suppliers held about 86% of the EV market in Q3 2025, so non-Chinese suppliers grow mainly with cell plants built outside China.
- LiPF6 moves in sharp cycles; the 2024 oversupply cut prices to historic lows, helping cell makers and hurting salt producers.
- Fire and toxic gas risks keep interest alive in fluorine-free salts and other electrolytes, a long-term risk to LiPF6 demand.
What to track
- LiPF6 spot price in China: Rising prices signal tightening supply and higher cell costs (Weekly · SMM and other price reporting agencies)
- Market share of Chinese electrolyte suppliers: A falling share shows non-Chinese supply chains gaining (Quarterly · SNE Research)
- EV battery installations outside China: Drive demand for localised electrolyte plants (Monthly · SNE Research and industry trackers)
For policymakers
Key learnings
- With about 86% of EV electrolyte supplied by Chinese firms in 2025, cell localisation without electrolyte localisation leaves a gap.
- Toxic gas from battery fires is a public safety issue for parking, tunnels and buses, which supports safety standards for battery packs.
- LiPF6 is a fluorine chemical, so domestic electrolyte making depends on fluorine chemistry and lithium supply and needs chemical industry policy, not only battery policy.
What to track
- India's imports of lithium-ion cells and electrolyte: Show how far domestic supply has developed (Monthly · Ministry of Commerce trade data)
- EV fire incidents and investigations: Inform battery safety standards (As reported · Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, testing agencies)
India
India imports close to all its battery cells, mostly from China, so the electrolyte in Indian EVs arrives inside imported cells; domestic electrolyte supply will matter only as cell plants under the ACC PLI start up.
