# Benzene and Coking coal

When coking coal is baked into coke for steelmaking, the oven gas carries crude benzol, which is recovered and refined into benzene. It is a by-product whose volume follows steel output, not benzene demand, and it matters most in China, where it supplied about a fifth of benzene in 2022.

## How they are linked

### 1. Coke oven benzol

*Joint production · Medium · Coke making yields benzene*

Heating coking coal without air drives off a gas rich in aromatics; by-product plants wash crude benzol out of this gas with oil and then separate it into benzene, toluene and xylene.

Coke plants are run for steel, so benzol output rises and falls with blast furnace demand for coke rather than with the benzene market. Plants without by-product recovery, or those that burn the gas, yield no benzene at all.

### 2. Coal route to benzene

*Physical flow · Asymmetric · Coking coal to benzene*

Crude benzol from coking is purified by hydrogenation to reach the specification of benzene made from oil, so coal-derived benzene has its own refining step.

- **3.64 Mt** hydrogenated (coal-derived) benzene output in China, 2022
- **19.2 Mt** China's total pure benzene output, 2022
- **8.35 Mt a year** China's hydrogenated benzene capacity, 2022

Coal-derived benzene was therefore about 19% of Chinese output in 2022, with the rest from refineries and crackers. New hydrogenation units, such as a 200,000 t a year crude benzene hydrogenation unit at Hongkun New Material Technology reported by Mysteel in 2025, keep the route growing; for benzene the coal link matters, but for coking coal benzene is a minor by-product credit.

### 3. Price link: co-product

*Cost and price · Strong · Both ways*

Coal and petrochemical prices share the wider energy cycle, which explains most of the co-movement, while the benzol stream adds a small direct link.

- **0.31** monthly change correlation
- **0.71** 12-month change correlation
- **0.23** fitted elasticity

The low elasticity fits a by-product: a rise in coal prices does not raise benzene supply costs much, because benzol is a small credit against coke. A fall in steel output, however, cuts benzol supply whatever the benzene price.

### 4. Emission rules

*Policy · Medium · Coke oven rules affect benzol recovery*

Benzol recovery releases carcinogenic vapours and leaves acid sludge, so coke oven emission norms shape how by-product plants are built and run.

Tighter emission rules raise the cost of running recovery plants, but recovering benzol also keeps aromatics out of the air, so emission control and by-product recovery tend to go together.

## For investors

### Key learnings

1. Coal-derived benzene was about 19% of China's 19.2 Mt benzene output in 2022, so Chinese steel and coke output moves benzene supply.
2. Benzol is a by-product, so its supply does not respond to benzene prices; a steel slowdown can tighten benzene even when oil is cheap.
3. The yearly price correlation of 0.71 mostly reflects the shared energy cycle, so it should not be read as a cost pass-through.

### What to track

- **China coke output**: Falling coke output cuts crude benzol and hydrogenated benzene supply (Monthly · National Bureau of Statistics of China)
- **Hydrogenated benzene price against petroleum benzene**: A wide discount shows coal-derived supply pressing on the market (Weekly · Chinese price reporters (SunSirs, Mysteel))

## For policymakers

### Key learnings

1. Coke oven benzol turns a steelmaking emission into a chemical feedstock, so recovery supports both air quality and domestic aromatics supply.
2. Recovery releases carcinogenic vapours and acid sludge, so emission norms for coke ovens need to cover by-product plants, not only ovens.
3. Because benzol supply follows steel output, it cannot be planned as a reliable benzene source on its own.

### What to track

- **Coke oven capacity with by-product recovery**: More recovery capacity means more benzene from steelmaking (Yearly · Ministry of Steel, steel company reports)
- **Coke oven emission compliance**: Shows whether recovery plants meet environmental norms (Yearly · Central Pollution Control Board)
