# Bisphenol A and Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is the largest use of bisphenol A, nearly two-thirds of world demand in 2020, so polycarbonate demand and new polycarbonate lines decide BPA run rates and prices. Both production routes start from BPA; the interfacial route also needs phosgene, which ties the chain to chlorine.

## How they are linked

### 1. Main polycarbonate monomer

*Physical flow · Strong · BPA into polycarbonate*

BPA forms the repeating unit of polycarbonate, so polycarbonate demand is the main reason BPA plants are built.

- **nearly two-thirds** polycarbonate's share of world BPA demand, 2020
- **about 71%** share of EU BPA use going to polycarbonate, 2003

In the interfacial route, salts of BPA in water are reacted with phosgene in a solvent; in the melt route, BPA is transesterified with diphenyl carbonate and no phosgene is used at the polymer step. Either way BPA is the main input.

### 2. Phosgene or melt route

*Physical flow · Medium · Route choice links polycarbonate to chlorine*

Interfacial plants make phosgene from chlorine and carbon monoxide, so a BPA and polycarbonate complex on that route needs a chlorine supply; melt plants avoid phosgene at the polymer step but need diphenyl carbonate.

- **13%** share of world phosgene demand used for polycarbonate, 2021
- **about 11%** share of world polycarbonate capacity on the melt route, 2001

MDI and TDI took about 82% of phosgene in 2021, and polycarbonate was the third use. The melt route, first used commercially in 1993, held about 11% of capacity in 2001 and was projected to reach almost 17% by 2005. Diphenyl carbonate can itself be made from phosgene and phenol, or without phosgene via dimethyl carbonate, so only the second option fully removes the chlorine link.

### 3. BPA built alongside polycarbonate

*Joint production · Medium · BPA plants planned for polycarbonate*

Polycarbonate makers want secure, high-purity BPA, so new polycarbonate projects are often paired with BPA units, which in turn draw on phenol and acetone.

- **165 kt a year** first phase of Deepak's Dahej polycarbonate plant, commissioning targeted for H2 FY2028 to FY2029
- **up to 240 kt a year** Deepak's approved BPA project, 2026

Deepak Chem Tech agreed in 2024 to acquire Trinseo's polycarbonate assets at Stade in Germany for its Dahej plant; in August 2026 the equipment was still being moved, and the group described an integrated chain from propylene to polycarbonate costing about Rs 11,500 crore. Its BPA project is described as complementing what would be India's first polycarbonate plant.

### 4. Price link: main product

*Cost and price · Strong · Both ways*

Because polycarbonate is the largest BPA outlet, its demand for glazing, car parts and electronics sets BPA operating rates, and BPA cost passes into polycarbonate prices.

- **0.38** monthly change correlation
- **0.73** 12-month change correlation
- **1.14** fitted elasticity

The site uses a cyclic intermediates proxy for BPA and a broad resin index for polycarbonate. The yearly link is strong; the monthly link is moderate, as polycarbonate prices also follow their own capacity cycle.

## For investors

### Key learnings

1. Polycarbonate demand and capacity are the main drivers of BPA operating rates and margins, more than epoxy.
2. Integrated BPA and polycarbonate producers earn the spread from phenol and acetone to polymer; a non-integrated polycarbonate maker carries BPA price risk.
3. The production route matters: interfacial plants rely on on-site phosgene and so on chlorine, while melt plants depend on diphenyl carbonate, which may itself be made with or without phosgene.

### What to track

- **Polycarbonate price against BPA price in Asia**: Shows where the chain margin sits (Weekly · industry price reports)
- **New polycarbonate lines and operating rates in China**: New lines raise BPA demand but pressure polycarbonate margins (Quarterly · company reports, industry consultants)
- **Phenol and acetone prices**: Set the cash cost of BPA (Weekly · industry price reports)

## For policymakers

### Key learnings

1. India has imported all of its BPA, about 135,000 t a year in 2022, so a polycarbonate plant alone would shift the import bill to BPA unless BPA is also made locally.
2. Deepak's 165 kt polycarbonate plant, targeted for H2 FY2028 to FY2029, and its BPA project of up to 240 kt a year are planned as one integrated chain from propylene to polymer.
3. Interfacial polycarbonate depends on phosgene made from chlorine, which brings strict process safety needs; the melt route avoids phosgene at the polymer step.

### What to track

- **India imports of BPA and polycarbonate**: Show the size of the import substitution opportunity (Monthly · DGCI&S)
- **Progress of Deepak's Dahej polycarbonate and BPA projects**: Determine when imports of both start to fall (Quarterly · company filings)

## India

India has had no polycarbonate plant and imported all its BPA, about 135,000 t a year in 2022. Deepak's 165 kt Dahej polycarbonate plant, using equipment bought from Trinseo at Stade, was targeted in August 2026 for commissioning in H2 FY2028 to FY2029, and its BPA project of up to 240 kt a year is planned to supply it.
