# Food and beverage processing and Wholesale and retail trade

Distribution is food processors' route to the consumer and one of their largest costs, about ₹13 of every ₹100 of output; kiranas still carry most of it, but quick commerce is taking share in big cities and squeezing traditional distributors.

## How they are linked

### 1. Buys from

*Physical flow · ₹13 per ₹100 · Food and beverage processing buys from Wholesale and retail trade*

Processors pay distributors, stockists and retailers for moving, storing and selling their goods, so trade margins are a large part of food costs.

- **₹13** of every ₹100 of Food and beverage processing output, all rounds (India 2022)
- **₹7.9** bought directly

Trade spends only ₹0.6 per ₹100 of its own output on processed food as an input, because goods bought for resale are counted as trade margin, not as purchases. Price indices move together over a year (correlation about 0.57 over 12 months, US PPI), with food prices leading by about a month.

### 2. Industry input

*Physical flow · Criticality 3 of 5 · Food and beverage processing to Wholesale and retail trade*

Five enterprise types in trade depend on processed food, led by branded goods makers and cold-chain operators; two in food processing depend on trade as their sales channel.

Packaged food is a core range for supermarkets, cash-and-carry and kiranas, but any one brand can be replaced, so dependence is moderate. Cold-chain operators rate higher because perishable volumes set their use of capacity.

Enterprise types that depend on it:

- FMCG distributors and stockists: wholesale channel (criticality 2 of 5)
- Grocery retailers and quick-commerce platforms: retail channel (criticality 2 of 5)

### 3. Kirana route to market

*Physical flow · Strong · Most packaged food reaches buyers through small shops*

India's grocery trade is spread across millions of small stores served by distributors, so processors must run large distributor networks to reach them.

- **85 to 90%** of mass grocery retail through traditional trade, 2026
- **13 to 14 million** kirana stores, 2026 estimate

This structure keeps distribution costs high and requires processors to run large distributor networks. It weakens where organised and online retail are dense: e-commerce was 18% of FMCG sales in the top 8 metros in Q4 2025 but 6% across urban India.

### 4. Quick commerce

*Substitution · Rising · Quick commerce competes with distributors and kiranas*

Dark-store apps buy direct from brands and deliver in minutes, bypassing the distributor and kirana chain for urban shoppers.

- **18%** e-commerce share of FMCG sales in the top 8 metros, Q4 2025
- **over three-quarters** quick commerce share of e-commerce FMCG sales, Q4 2025

E-commerce is 6% of urban FMCG sales overall but above 21% in southern metros. In September 2024 the distributors' federation AICPDF said it planned to complain to the CCI about predatory pricing by quick commerce firms; an April 2024 Elara Securities estimate put the channel at 1 to 2% of sales for major brands and 7 to 8% for smaller ones.

### 5. GST pass-through

*Cost and price · Medium · Tax cuts reach shelves through the trade chain*

When GST on packaged food falls, processors must reprice stock already in the distribution chain, so the speed of pass-through depends on distributors and retailers.

- **7.8%** FMCG value growth, October to December 2025

GST on biscuits, pasta, dairy and chocolates was cut to 5% from 22 September 2025. NIQ found traditional trade was hit harder than modern trade by the supply and price adjustments that followed, while modern trade grew about threefold compared with the previous quarter.

## For investors

### Key learnings

1. Distribution takes about ₹13 of every ₹100 of food processing output, so channel shifts change processors' margins.
2. Kiranas still carry 85 to 90% of mass grocery sales (2026), but quick commerce is over three-quarters of online FMCG sales (Q4 2025).
3. Brands that sell well online gain in big cities, while distributors face margin pressure and disputes with quick commerce firms.

### What to track

- **FMCG growth by channel**: Shows how fast sales move from kiranas to modern and online trade (Quarterly · NIQ)
- **Quick commerce share of brand sales**: Rising share lowers distributor margins and raises platform bargaining power (Quarterly · company results)
- **Food CPI and packaged food prices**: Shows how quickly cost and tax changes pass through to shelves (Monthly · MoSPI)

## For policymakers

### Key learnings

1. Small shops are the main route for packaged food and a large source of jobs, so retail rules affect both prices and livelihoods.
2. Distributors have sought CCI action over quick commerce pricing; competition and FDI rules for marketplaces will decide how fast the shift unfolds.
3. GST cuts take time to reach consumers through kiranas; monitoring shelf prices tests whether the 2025 cuts were passed on.

### What to track

- **CCI proceedings on quick commerce**: Outcome sets rules for discounting and inventory models (As issued · CCI)
- **E-commerce share of FMCG by city tier**: Shows where traditional trade is losing share (Quarterly · NIQ)
- **Packaged food price indices after GST changes**: Tests pass-through of tax cuts (Monthly · MoSPI, Department of Consumer Affairs)

## India

India has an estimated 13 to 14 million kirana stores that carry most packaged food, while quick commerce is reshaping grocery sales in the largest metros.
