# Hafnium and Zirconium

Hafnium has no ore of its own: it is the impurity stripped out of zirconium to make nuclear-grade metal, so hafnium supply depends on how much dehafniated zirconium the nuclear industry orders.

## How they are linked

### 1. By-product of zirconium

*Joint production · Strong · Zircon to zirconium to hafnium*

Hafnium and zirconium are chemical near-twins that occur together in zircon, and hafnium is recovered only when zirconium is processed and separated.

- **about 50 to 1** zirconium to hafnium ratio in zircon
- **about 1.2 Mt** world zirconium mineral concentrate output, 2025 estimate

USGS states that world hafnium resources are associated with those of zircon and baddeleyite. Even ample zircon mining does not ensure hafnium, because separation happens in only a few plants.

### 2. Nuclear-grade separation

*Policy · Strong · Nuclear zirconium specs create hafnium supply*

Zirconium barely absorbs neutrons, which suits reactor fuel cladding, but hafnium absorbs them strongly, so nuclear-grade zirconium must be purified of its hafnium, and that waste stream is the hafnium supply.

- **under 100 ppm** hafnium allowed in nuclear-grade zirconium
- **1 to 3%** hafnium content before purification

Framatome's Jarrie plant in France separates nuclear-grade zirconium tetrachloride from hafnium tetrachloride by extractive distillation and turns the hafnium by-product into metal. CPM Group notes hafnium was first recovered in commercial volumes as a waste product.

### 3. Supply capped by zirconium demand

*Shared risk · Asymmetric · Hafnium output depends on zirconium orders*

Hafnium makers cannot raise output without separating more zirconium, so a jump in demand for superalloys or chips shows up as price spikes rather than new supply.

- **at most 140 to 150 t** effective global capacity for aerospace and electronic grade hafnium, 2025
- **$3,800 per kg** unwrought hafnium price, 2025 estimate ($4,560 in 2024)

CPM Group estimates that extending dehafniation from nuclear-grade to all zirconium could raise hafnium supply by 20 to 25%, but this is held back by limited demand for dehafniated zirconium. It puts the price needed to support primary hafnium production at a sustained $5,000 to $6,000 per kg, above the 2025 level.

### 4. Partial substitutes

*Substitution · Weak · Zirconium can stand in for hafnium in some alloys*

Their chemistry is so similar that zirconium can be used interchangeably with hafnium in certain superalloys, giving buyers some relief when hafnium is scarce.

The substitution is narrow and works only in certain superalloys, hafnium's leading use. In reactor control rods hafnium competes with boron or silver-indium-cadmium alloys rather than with zirconium.

## For investors

### Key learnings

1. Hafnium supply is a function of nuclear-grade zirconium output, not of hafnium prices, so new reactor and fuel orders are the real supply signal.
2. Effective supply of high-grade hafnium was only about 140 to 150 tonnes in 2025, so small demand shifts in aerospace or chips move prices sharply.
3. Zircon mining is broad, led by Australia and South Africa, but separation is concentrated in a few plants in France, the US, Russia and China, which is where the risk lies.

### What to track

- **Unwrought hafnium price**: Tightness in aerospace and chip-grade supply (Yearly · USGS; more often · Argus)
- **Nuclear fuel fabrication and reactor build orders**: More dehafniated zirconium means more hafnium by-product (Quarterly · Framatome, Westinghouse and IAEA PRIS)

## For policymakers

### Key learnings

1. A country with a nuclear fuel programme that separates zirconium also holds a hafnium supply, which matters for defence, space and chip industries.
2. India's C-MET has built the first domestic hafnium sponge pilot plant for ISRO and atomic energy control rods, a step towards domestic supply of a metal most countries import.
3. Because hafnium depends on zirconium separation, hafnium security should be planned together with nuclear fuel capacity.

### What to track

- **Domestic hafnium sponge output**: Progress towards self-reliance for space and nuclear uses (Yearly · C-MET and Department of Atomic Energy)
- **Hafnium import sources**: Concentration risk in supply (US unwrought hafnium imports were 54% from Germany and 21% from China, 2021 to 2024) (Yearly · USGS and Ministry of Commerce)

## India

C-MET Hyderabad has set up the first indigenous hafnium sponge pilot plant to supply ISRO and nuclear control rods.
