Activated carbon: Cycles
How new pollution rules make demand jump
What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.Activated carbon prices are set by product grade and raw material. Coconut carbon cycles with shell charcoal supply, which depends on coconut harvests and competition from other charcoal buyers; coal carbon follows energy prices and Chinese supply. Demand steps up when regulators tighten water and air rules (US mercury rules in the 2010s, PFAS rules from 2024) and is otherwise steady. Listed producers' margins (Haycarb, Ingevity, Kuraray's carbon segment) are the best public indicators besides ICC trade data.
The spread to watch Activated carbon price minus shell charcoal costAt about 2.5 t charcoal per t (indicative), Sri Lankan carbon at $4,300/t against charcoal at up to $815/t leaves about $2,250/t for activation and margin; Indonesian carbon at $2,200/t against charcoal up to $1,000/t leaves nothing at the top of the charcoal range (ICC, derived).
Booms and busts
- 2015-2016
US Mercury and Air Toxics Standards drove powdered carbon injection at coal power plants, then coal plant closures cut that demand (indicative).
not published
- 2023-2024
Sri Lankan exports hit a record 48,547 t in Jan-Oct 2024 as US and European water demand grew (ICC).
Sri Lankan export value $102.9 million (Jan-Oct 2023) to $123.3 million (Jan-Oct 2024) (ICC)
- 2025
Shell charcoal shortages and higher costs pushed coconut carbon prices to records; US import value rose 38% on 10% more volume.
Sri Lanka export price about $3,000/t (Jan 2025) to over $4,300/t (Oct 2025); Indonesia about $1,300-1,400/t to above $2,200/t (ICC)
What drives the cycle
- Water quality regulation. PFAS, pesticide and disinfection by-product limits set long-run demand for GAC beds.
- Coconut shell charcoal supply. Harvests, weather and competing uses decide coconut carbon cost.
- Chinese coal-based supply and trade duties. US duties on Chinese carbon shift buyers to coconut and US coal carbon.
- Coal power and mercury rules. Powdered carbon demand falls as coal plants close.
- Gold mining activity. Gold prices drive new CIP/CIL capacity and carbon demand.
