Chiral and specialty building blocks: Overview

Why handedness matters in medicines, pesticides and flavours

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Many molecules exist in left- and right-handed forms that act very differently in the body or a pest. Chiral building blocks are small, single-handed intermediates, such as amino alcohols, chiral amines, epoxides, lactones and protected amino acids, that drug and agrochemical makers assemble into larger molecules. They are made by separating mixtures (resolution), by asymmetric catalysis, by enzymes, or from natural chiral sources such as sugars and amino acids. Published market sizes vary from $73 billion to $99 billion in 2025 because they count chiral drug value; the merchant building-block trade is far smaller. China and India make much of it.

Volume not published Market value $98.9 billion (2025, IMARC) or $73.2 billion (2025, Fact.MR) for 'chiral chemicals', which includes value of chiral APIs; niche lines are small, e.g. chiral amino alcohols $54.9 million (2025, Future Market Insights) Growth about 7-11% a year (FMI 7.4% for amino alcohols to 2035; IMARC 11.2% for chiral chemicals to 2034) IMARC (2026); Fact.MR via EIN Presswire (2025); Future Market Insights (Oct 2025)

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Pharmaceuticals (APIs and advanced intermediates)71%about $70 billionbasis The wrong enantiomer can be inactive or harmful, so regulators since the FDA's 1992 policy expect single-enantiomer development. Most new small-molecule drugs have one or more stereocentres, and each needs a chiral source or step. IMARC (2026); FDA policy statement 1992 (indicative) racemic drugs (now rare for new approvals)
achiral drug designs
Agrochemicals12%about $12 billionbasis Single-isomer products halve the dose of active ingredient: S-metolachlor replaced metolachlor, and L-glufosinate is replacing racemic glufosinate. Chiral pyrethroids such as lambda-cyhalothrin are isomer-enriched. indicative share racemic generics at higher dose
Flavours and fragrances8%about $8 billionbasis L-menthol, for cooling, is made by asymmetric catalysis (Takasago) or from mint; many fragrance molecules smell different in each handedness. indicative share natural extracts (mint, citrus)
racemic aroma chemicals
Nutrition, cosmetics and fine chemicals5%about $5 billionbasis Chiral vitamins and their precursors, ceramides and peptides for skin care, and chiral ligands and auxiliaries sold to other chemists. indicative share fermentation-derived ingredients
Research, materials and other4%about $4 billionbasis Chiral dopants for liquid crystal displays, chiral stationary phases for chromatography, and catalogue building blocks for drug discovery. indicative achiral materials
Only the pharmaceutical share (70.8%) is published (IMARC 2025); the rest are indicative. IMARC's total counts chiral product value broadly; the merchant trade in building blocks is much smaller and not published.

From raw material to user

  1. Chiral source Sugars, amino acids, tartaric and lactic acid from fermentation or plants (the 'chiral pool'), or a racemic or achiral precursor from petrochemicals.
  2. Creating or separating handedness Resolution with a chiral acid or base (traditional separation, 45.2% of the market by technology, IMARC 2025), asymmetric catalysis, enzymes or chiral chromatography.
  3. Building block Typically 98-99.5%+ enantiomeric excess (ee) intermediates, sold in kilograms to hundreds of tonnes (indicative).
  4. API or active ingredient synthesis The block is built into the final molecule under GMP (drugs) or registration specs (agrochemicals), often by a CDMO.
  5. Formulation and sale Drugs and crop products; North America is 42.1% of chiral chemicals demand by value (IMARC 2025).

Three things to know

  • Pharmaceuticals take about 71% of chiral chemicals demand by value and North America 42% (IMARC 2025).
  • Merck and Codexis replaced a rhodium-catalysed step in sitagliptin with an engineered transaminase, raising yield 10-13% and cutting total waste 19% (Savile et al., Science 2010, indicative).
  • Classical resolution, the oldest method, still has the largest share of chiral production by technology at 45.2% (IMARC 2025).
