Formaldehyde: Overview
How one simple molecule glues the furniture industry
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.Formaldehyde (HCHO) is made by oxidising methanol over a silver or metal oxide catalyst and sold as a 37-50% water solution called formalin. World demand was about 23 Mt in 2022 (ChemAnalyst), more than half in Asia. Urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde and melamine resins bind wood panels, laminates and insulation; formaldehyde also feeds polyacetal plastics, MDI for polyurethanes and many specialty chemicals. It is the largest single outlet for methanol, it is made close to users because the solution does not travel well, and its health classification is tightening panel rules worldwide.
Volume about 23 Mt (2022) Market value not published reliably; market-report estimates vary widely Growth about 3.4% a year to 2032 (ChemAnalyst forecast) ChemAnalyst global formaldehyde market analysis via GII (2023)Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins and concentrates | 38% | about 8.7 Mtbasis | UF resin is the cheapest strong glue for particleboard, MDF and interior plywood. It cures fast in hot presses and costs a fraction of isocyanate binders, which is why furniture and flat-pack panels everywhere depend on it. ChemAnalyst via GII (2023) | pMDI (isocyanate) binders Soy and lignin bio-adhesives Melamine-fortified UF (lower emissions) |
| Phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins: exterior plywood, OSB, mineral wool, laminates, foundry | n/a | not publishedbasis | PF resins resist water and heat, so they suit structural and exterior panels, glass and stone wool insulation binders and brake linings. ChemAnalyst via GII (2023) | pMDI Bio-based binders for insulation |
| Melamine-formaldehyde resins (laminates, decor paper, tableware) | n/a | not publishedbasis | Melamine resins give the hard, glossy surface on laminate flooring and kitchen boards. indicative | Acrylic and polyester coatings |
| Polyoxymethylene (POM, acetal) engineering plastic | n/a | not publishedbasis | POM is a stiff, low-friction plastic for gears, clips and fuel-system parts. Trioxane made from formaldehyde is its monomer. ChemAnalyst via GII (2023) | Nylon PBT |
| Chemical intermediates: MDI, butanediol (Reppe), pentaerythritol, hexamine, paraformaldehyde, glyphosate, concrete superplasticisers | n/a | not publishedbasis | Formaldehyde adds one carbon cheaply to many molecules. MDI for polyurethane foam, pentaerythritol for alkyd paints and glyphosate all start here. indicative | Few at scale for the same molecules |
From raw material to user
- Methanol supply About 1.13-1.2 t of methanol per t of formaldehyde (100% basis), depending on process (stoichiometry 1.07 t plus yield loss, indicative).
- Catalytic oxidation Methanol vapour and air pass over silver (600-720 C) or iron-molybdenum oxide (250-400 C) catalyst.
- Absorption to formalin The gas is absorbed in water to give 37-55% solution, often stabilised with a little methanol.
- Resin making Most formalin goes straight into an adjacent resin reactor with urea, phenol or melamine; Assam Petrochemicals runs a 125 t/day formalin plant beside its methanol unit.
- Panel pressing Resin is sprayed on wood particles or veneers and hot-pressed; the boards go into furniture and buildings.

Gas Natural gasThree things to know
- About 38% of the world's 23 Mt of formaldehyde becomes urea-formaldehyde resin for wood panels (ChemAnalyst, 2022).
- Formaldehyde takes 46% of India's methanol, the largest single use (Crisil, FY2026e).
- From August 2026 the EU limits formaldehyde emissions from furniture and wood products to 0.062 mg/m3 (Regulation (EU) 2023/1464).
