MTBE: Cycles

Priced like petrol: crude, cracks and octane premiums

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

MTBE is priced off petrol: its value is the octane and volume it adds to gasoline, so prices move with crude, petrol cracks and octane premiums, with methanol and butane setting the cost floor. Demand rises in the northern summer driving season. Margins swing with the spread between MTBE and its feedstocks: when petrol is strong and butane cheap, on-purpose plants earn well; when Chinese capacity floods the market, margins collapse, as in 2025. Regulatory shocks, such as the US phase-out in the 2000s, are the biggest structural events.

The spread to watch MTBE minus feedstocks (0.364 t methanol + 0.64 t butane/isobutylene)

Example: FOB China $630/t (late 2025) minus 0.364 x about $250/t methanol (CFR China) = about $540/t left for isobutylene and conversion (indicative). Traders also watch MTBE versus Eurobob or RBOB petrol, as an octane premium.

Booms and busts

  1. 1999-2006

Groundwater contamination led US states to ban MTBE; federal oxygenate rules were dropped in 2006 and ethanol replaced it. US demand vanished and producers turned to exports.

  2. 2022

Petrol cracks and crude spiked after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, lifting octane values and MTBE prices worldwide.

not public in sources reached; World Bank Brent averaged about $99/bbl in 2022

  3. 2024-2025

Chinese overcapacity and weak domestic blending demand pushed prices down and many plants into losses.

    FOB China $665-725/t (Sep-Nov 2024) to $620-640/t (Sep-Nov 2025) (S&P Global Platts)

  4. 2026

The Hormuz disruption lifted crude above $100/bbl and cut Gulf exports of methanol and MTBE; prices for octane components rose (qualitative).

WTI $112.88/bbl on 7 April 2026 (ALCHEMPro); MTBE price for 2026 not found

What drives the cycle

  • Petrol demand and cracks. 94% of MTBE goes into petrol; summer driving season lifts demand.
  • Methanol and butane prices. cost floor.
  • Ethanol mandates. E10-E20 rules reduce octane need and displace MTBE (US, India, Brazil).
  • Chinese capacity. China's additions set Asian surplus.
