Oilfield and mining chemicals: Production
Why service giants are buying up chemical makers
What this tab covers Who makes it and how much: world capacity and output, utilisation, the top producing countries and companies globally and in India, concentration, new capacity coming, and each region's position.| Measure | Figure | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| World capacity | not published | no public capacity database | |
| World output | about $25.6 billion of oilfield chemical sales (2025) | IMARC 2025 | |
| Capacity utilisation | not published | Activity indicators replace utilisation: rig counts outside the US fell from 1,349 to 1,258 and US rigs from 599 to 564 between 2024 and 2025 (through October), yet barite sales rose because wells were deeper. | USGS MCS 2026 via barite tile |
| Concentration | company shares not published; SLB (with ChampionX), Halliburton and Baker Hughes lead (indicative) | Onshore is the largest location segment (IMARC). Barite mining is concentrated: India 34%, China 25%, Morocco 11%, top-3 about 71% (USGS 2025). | IMARC 2025; barite tile |
| New capacity | not published | Consolidation: SLB-ChampionX ($7.8 billion, 2025). Kemira exited oil and gas chemicals in 2024 (its results are reported 'O&G-adjusted'). | World Oil (Jul 2025); Kemira 2025 bulletin |
Top producing countries
India (barite supply) 34% · 3.0 Mt barite (2025), mostly APMDC Mangampet- North America (region): largest region (IMARC 2025)
- United States: US shale completions drive stimulation chemicals; SLB North America revenue $2.21 billion in Q4 2025 including ChampionX
- Middle East: large production chemical and drilling fluid market; output disrupted from Feb 2026 by the Hormuz near-closure
- China: large EOR polymer user and maker of xanthates and polyacrylamide (indicative)

India is the largest barite miner (34% in 2025) and a major guar grower, so it supplies raw materials to world drilling and fracturing. Dorf Ketal is the main Indian-owned production and refinery chemical company. ONGC and Oil India buy most services and chemicals by tender; global service companies hold much of that work (indicative).
Position by region
| Region | Position |
|---|---|
| US | Largest market; stimulation chemical demand swings with shale completions. |
| EU | Small onshore market; North Sea offshore chemicals need OSPAR HOCNF approval. |
| India | Raw material supplier (barite, guar); domestic upstream demand from ONGC, Oil India and Cairn. |
| China | Large EOR polymer user; makes xanthates and polyacrylamide for export (indicative). |
| Japan | Little oilfield demand; trading houses and mining reagent users abroad. |
| Middle East | Large, steady production chemical demand; disrupted by the 2026 Hormuz near-closure, when output from affected countries fell more than 14 mb/d by May (IEA via crude oil tile). |
