Rubber chemicals: Cycles

How Chinese factory closures swing world rubber chemical prices

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

Rubber chemical prices are set in China. When Chinese plants are closed by environmental campaigns, prices and non-Chinese margins jump; when Chinese capacity is added and exports surge, realisations elsewhere fall. Demand follows tyre output, which is steady, so supply drives the cycle. Raw material (aniline, MIBK, acetone) costs pass through with a lag. Trade remedies set a partial floor in India. NOCIL's results are the clearest public record of the cycle.

The spread to watch Realisation minus aniline-based raw material cost per kg

Not published; NOCIL's EBITDA per kg (down 46% YoY in Q4 FY2026) is the best public proxy.

Booms and busts

  1. 2017-2019

Chinese environmental inspections shut rubber chemical plants, lifting prices and NOCIL's margins; Indian anti-dumping duties on some products were withdrawn in July 2019.

not retrieved (NOCIL margins were much higher than today, indicative); ADD withdrawal July 2019 (CARE Ratings)

  2. FY2024-FY2025

Dumping from China, Korea, Thailand and the EU hit Indian prices and volumes.

NOCIL income Rs 1,443.47 crore to Rs 1,391.76 crore; PBILDT margin 13.43% to 9.81%; realisations down about 9% (CARE Ratings)

  3. FY2026

Volumes recovered but prices kept falling; then a duty on sulphenamides was announced and NOCIL shares hit a 20% upper circuit.

Q4 FY2026 realisation about Rs 217/kg, down 15% YoY; EBITDA per kg down 46% YoY (PL Capital); share price Rs 190.70 on 22 Jun 2026, up 20% (Business Today)

What drives the cycle

  • Chinese supply and environmental policy. China dominates output; closures or new capacity swing world prices.
  • Tyre production. Main demand; India and China tyre exports matter.
  • Aniline and benzene prices. Core raw materials.
  • Trade remedies. Indian anti-dumping duties shield domestic prices.
  • 6PPD regulation. A forced switch would create a new product cycle.
