Asbestos: Characteristics

Strength, flexibility and fireproofing: why builders loved it

What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).

Supply volume characteristics

CharacteristicFigureWhat it meansSource
Current production volumeabout 960,000 t (2025e, USGS); 1.21 Mt (2024, World Mining Data)Russia produced about 310,000 t, Kazakhstan and China 250,000 t each and Brazil 150,000 t. World use was about 930,000 t in 2025, down nearly 55% from about 2 Mt in 2000.USGS MCS 2026, Asbestos; World Mining Data 2026
Inventory and stock levelsnot publishedNo exchange or government stocks. US chloralkali plants used only stockpiled fibre in 2025 (about 50 t), as imports were banned in May 2024.USGS MCS 2026
Capacity utilisationnot publishedKostanay Minerals in Kazakhstan produces more than 250,000 t a year; Brazil's only producer sold 166,890 t for export in 2024. Output is set by shrinking demand, not by capacity.Forbes Kazakhstan 2022; USGS MCS 2026
Geographic and producer concentrationRussia 32%; top-3 (Russia, Kazakhstan, China) 84%; HHI about 2,600 (USGS 2025) or 3,422 (World Mining Data 2024)Only four countries mine it. Kazakhstan and Brazil each have a single producer; Uralasbest dominates Russian output. World Mining Data gives Russia 51%.USGS MCS 2026 (HHI computed); World Mining Data 2026
Supply elasticitysupply is shrinking by policy, not responding to priceReserves are 150 Mt, about 156 years of output, so geology does not bind. Bans and lawsuits do: Brazil's Supreme Court ruled asbestos unconstitutional, and Goias set a 5-year deadline to end mining once a closure plan is agreed.USGS MCS 2026
Project pipeline and CapExnone; capacity is expected to fallNo new mines are planned. Zimbabwe may reprocess old tailings. US use will end by 2036 for chloralkali and 2037 for imported gaskets.USGS MCS 2026
Logistics and export flowsmost output is exported to Asian asbestos-cement plantsKostanay exports about 95% of its output to Uzbekistan, India, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka, China and Vietnam. Russia supplied 63% of India's 308,506 t of imports in 2020-21. Fibre moves in bags by rail and sea.Forbes Kazakhstan 2022; IBM 2022

Material characteristics Industrial mineral

Commercial asbestos today is chrysotile, a fibrous serpentine. Its strength, flexibility and heat resistance made it a cheap reinforcing fibre for cement sheets and pipes. Value is set mainly by fibre length: long fibres for textiles and friction were the premium grades, short fibres go into cement. All forms are proven human carcinogens, which now governs every commercial decision.

PropertyValue / specificationWhy it mattersSource
Fibre length gradegraded by length groups; US tariff lines separate crudes and milled fibre groups 3, 4 and 5Longer fibres are worth more; most cement uses shorter gradesUSGS MCS 2026 (tariff schedule); Quebec Standard grading
ChemistryMg3Si2O5(OH)4, about 40% MgO, 40% SiO2, 13% water (indicative)Loses structural water at about 600-700 C, which limits top-end heat use (indicative)mineralogy reference, indicative
Tensile strengthvery high for a mineral fibre (indicative)Lets 8-10% fibre reinforce cement sheets and pipes cheaplyIBM (dosage)
