Iron ore: Overview
Why nearly all iron ore is destined for steel
What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blast-furnace ironmaking (sintered fines, lump and BF pellets) | 95% | about 1.75 billion t of ore and agglomerates a yearbasis | The blast furnace is still the cheapest way to make large volumes of iron where coking coal is available. It accepts sinter made from cheap fines, so the abundant Pilbara and Brazilian fines that dominate seaborne trade find a home. China's 830 Mt of pig iron in 2025 is almost all blast furnace. USGS MCS 2026, Iron and Steel; Smil (2016), Still the Iron Age | Steel scrap in electric arc furnaces Direct-reduced iron from gas or hydrogen |
| Direct reduction (DR-grade pellets and lump for DRI and HBI) | 5% | about 75 Mt DRI in 2013; current global total not in sources usedbasis | Where natural gas is cheap (Middle East) or coking coal is scarce (India's coal-based kilns), iron ore is reduced in solid state and melted in electric furnaces. It needs higher-grade, low-impurity ore and is the planned route for low-carbon hydrogen steel. Smil (2016); USGS MCS 2026 (US DRI/HBI plants) | Blast-furnace pig iron Prime steel scrap |
| Pellet and concentrate feed from low-grade ores (taconite, magnetite, itabirite) | n/a | Vale alone produced 31.4 Mt of pellets in 2025basis | Low-grade ores must be ground, concentrated and pelletised before use. Pellets cut coke rates in blast furnaces and are the main DR feed, so they earn a premium over fines. US mines ship almost all output as pellets. USGS MCS 2026, Iron Ore; Vale 2026 | Sinter from direct-shipping fines Lump ore |
| Non-steel uses (cement raw mix, coal-washing heavy media, pigments, ballast) | 2% | about 0.8 Mt in the USbasis | Iron oxide supplies iron to cement clinker, dense magnetite separates coal from rock in washeries, and iron oxides colour paints and concrete. These are small niches that use cheap local ore. USGS MCS 2026, Iron Ore | Mill scale and pyrite cinder in cement Synthetic iron oxide pigments |
From mine to user
- 1. Exploration of banded iron formations World resources exceed 900 Bt of ore with 260 Bt of iron (USGS 2026). Pilbara ores average about 62% Fe, Brazil's itabirite about 50% and China's ores about 30% (Smil).
- 2. Open-pit mining Giant pits with autonomous trucks; Rio Tinto detonates about a million blast holes a year in the Pilbara (Conway). World usable ore output was 2.6 Bt in 2025 (USGS).
- 3. Crushing, screening and beneficiation High-grade hematite is only crushed and screened into lump and fines; low-grade ore is ground and concentrated. Pelletising needs about 350 MJ of heat and 25-35 kWh per tonne (Smil).
- 4. Rail to port Pilbara ore rides private railways (Rio Tinto runs about 1,600 km) to Port Hedland and Dampier; Carajas ore travels 890 km to Ponta da Madeira (Smil; Humphreys).
- 5. Seaborne shipping Capesize and 400,000 t Valemax ships carry ore mainly to China, which took 73.6% of 2024 import value (Comtrade). Traded share of output rose from under 40% in the early 1970s to 69% in 2013 (Smil).
- 6. Sintering or pelletising at the mill Fines are sintered with limestone and coke breeze at the steelworks, then charged to the blast furnace with lump and pellets at about 1.35 t of ore per t of pig iron (2013).
- 7. Ironmaking and steelmaking World pig iron was about 1.30 Bt in 2025, 830 Mt of it in China and 98 Mt in India (USGS).

- Iron ore mining is the third most massive extractive enterprise, behind only fossil fuels and bulk construction materials (Smil).
- Rio Tinto detonates around a million blast holes a year in the Pilbara, roughly one every 30 seconds (Conway).
- Between 1982 and 1988 the seaborne iron ore benchmark price fell every year, ending 32% lower (Humphreys).
