Iron oxide pigments: Characteristics
How red, yellow and black come from one element
What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).Supply volume characteristics
| Characteristic | Figure | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current production volume | no world total; India about 3.4 Mt of crude ocher and Germany 280,000 t of natural and synthetic pigment (2025e) | China makes over half of world synthetic pigment (LANXESS, 2017). US producers sold about 32,000 t worth $60 million in 2025, and US apparent consumption was about 200,000 t. | USGS MCS 2026, Iron Oxide Pigments; LANXESS 2017 |
| Inventory and stock levels | not published | There are no exchange or government stocks. Pigment makers and distributors hold working stocks of powders and granules. | USGS MCS 2026 |
| Capacity utilisation | not published | LANXESS's Krefeld-Uerdingen plant, the world's largest, had about 280,000 t of capacity, and the company planned about 400,000 t in total by 2019. Utilisation is not disclosed. | LANXESS via bft International |
| Geographic and producer concentration | China over 50% of synthetic supply; LANXESS the largest single producer | No country HHI can be computed because there is no world total. In US synthetic imports, China supplied 44% and Germany 30% (2021-24). | LANXESS 2017; USGS MCS 2026 |
| Supply elasticity | moderate: raw materials are abundant, but new chemical plants take years | Feedstocks are scrap iron, steel pickling liquor and iron salts, so supply is not resource-limited. Volumes swing with building and coatings demand: US imports fell from 225,000 t (2022) to 114,000 t (2023) and recovered to 180,000 t (2025). | USGS MCS 2026 |
| Project pipeline and CapEx | not published; benchmark CapEx about EUR 2,200 per tonne of annual capacity (derived) | LANXESS's Ningbo plant was designed for 25,000 t a year of red pigment and cost about EUR 55 million when it started in Q1 2016. No newer named projects were found. | LANXESS (derived from cost and capacity) |
| Logistics and export flows | US imports 180,000 t (2025); synthetic pigment moves by container | Natural pigment is less than 2% of US imports; Cyprus (51%), France (23%) and Austria (18%) supply it. US exports rose 23% in 2025, 37% to Mexico. | USGS MCS 2026 |
Material characteristics Industrial mineral
Iron oxide pigments are sold by colour, not tonnage. Red (haematite), yellow (goethite) and black (magnetite) shades depend on chemistry, particle size and shape. Buyers test colour strength against a standard, Fe2O3 content, oil absorption, soluble salts and heat stability. Synthetic grades give purer and more consistent shades than natural earths, which is why they dominate trade.
| Property | Value / specification | Why it matters | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron oxide content | synthetic red typically above 95% Fe2O3; natural ochres much lower (indicative) | Purity sets colour strength and price; ISO 1248 classifies pigment types | ISO 1248; values indicative |
| Colour and tinting strength | measured against a reference sample (CIELAB colour difference) | Paint and concrete makers buy to a shade; small deviations are rejected | ISO 1248; ASTM C979 |
| Particle size and shape | sub-micron particles; yellow grades are needle-shaped (indicative) | Size controls hue and hiding power; needles affect viscosity in paint | pigment literature, indicative |
| Heat stability | yellow goethite turns red when heated above about 180-200 C (indicative) | Limits yellow pigments in hot-processed plastics and baked coatings | pigment literature, indicative |
| Suitability for concrete | pigments for integrally coloured concrete tested to ASTM C979 and EN 12878 | Pavers and roof tiles need light-fast, alkali-stable pigment that does not weaken concrete | ASTM C979; EN 12878 |
| Form | powder, granules or slurry | Granules and slurries dose cleanly in concrete plants and carry a price premium | USGS MCS 2026 |
