Peat: Production
A northern trade with no dominant producer
What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.USGS puts world output at 18 Mt in 2024 and 17 Mt in 2025. Producers are northern: Finland (2.5 Mt), Canada and Latvia (2.0 Mt each), then Belarus, Russia and Sweden (1.8 Mt each). No country holds more than about 15%, so supply is unconcentrated. Output is falling in Europe as climate policy bites. Latvia dropped from 2.7 to 2.0 Mt, Germany from 990 to 830 kt. Canada rose from 1.76 to 2.0 Mt. US output was steady at about 330 kt.
USGS estimate
World, 2024 18,000 thousand metric tons World, 2025e 17,000 thousand metric tonsLargest producers by company, global
- Klasmann-Deilmann: 3.8 million m3 growing media (derived: 1.15 million m3 of alternatives = 30% of production) (2025)
- Belarus state peat enterprises: 0.0325 Mt/yr briquette capacity at new Krupki plant (expandable to 0.09 Mt) (2025)
Largest producers by company, India
India is not listed among peat producers (USGS 2025). Coir pith (coco peat) from coconut husk, which USGS lists as a competing material, is the main growing medium available locally.
