Scandium: Production

A whole world market measured in tens of tonnes

What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

Output data are sparse and rest on industry estimates. Global output was about 80 t of scandium oxide in 2025, against capacity of over 90 t a year. Consumption was about 60 t. China was the leading producer, and the Philippines-Japan chain also supplied oxide. Canada aims to expand Sorel-Tracy to 9 t a year, backed by $18 million from the Canada Growth Fund. Concentration is high, though country shares are not published. The market is so small that one new plant could reshape it.

USGS estimate

World, 2024 – metric tons, scandium oxide equivalent (industry estimate) World, 2025e 80 metric tons, scandium oxide equivalent (industry estimate)

Largest producers by company, global

Rio Tinto (Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium) 3 t/yr Sc2O3 initial capacity (expansion to 9 t/yr nameplate announced), latest reported year.

Largest producers by company, India

India has no commercial scandium production and no published scandium reserves. India's rare-earth imports (which include scandium and yttrium) were 471 t in 2020-21, 94% from China (IBM Rare Earths 2022). Bauxite residue (red mud) and titanium streams are possible future sources, but no plant was operating in 2025.
