Steel: Production

How China came to make more than half of all steel

What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

World raw steel output was 1.88 billion tonnes in 2024 and about 1.9 billion in 2025 (USGS). China made 1.01 billion tonnes in 2024, about 54%, so production is highly concentrated. China's share alone implies a concentration index (HHI) of nearly 2,900. India is second, at 150 million tonnes and growing, followed by Japan, the US and Russia. Pig iron, a gauge of the ore-based route, totalled 1.28 billion tonnes, two-thirds of it Chinese. Falling Chinese steel demand is being offset by growth in India, Vietnam, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
