Strontium: Movement
Why US strontium comes almost wholly from Mexico
What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.Flows are described from USGS import data. The US is fully import-dependent. In 2021-24 its celestite came over 99% from Mexico, and its compounds from Germany (51%) and Mexico (41%). Total imports were 64% Mexican. Celestite imports jumped to 8,100 t of strontium content in 2025 from 29 t in 2024. Iran's dominance means sanctions complicate world trade. US tariffs are zero on celestite and 3.7-4.2% on compounds.
No distinct HS trade code for this commodity, so trade flows are not charted.
