Combined heat and power: Engineering and integration
Starts in minutes, runs alongside the grid and boilers
What this tab covers Engineering and operating integration: how tightly it is coupled to the host process, how steady the waste stream is, and how hard it is to retrofit.CHP runs in parallel with the grid and back-up boilers, so a trip rarely stops the host. It needs long running hours and a steady heat demand to pay off.
Process interdependence (coupling risk)
FavourableMost CHP plants are grid-connected, with boilers kept as back-up, so a CHP outage means buying power and burning more gas rather than stopping production. Engines offer at least 92% availability, start in 3-5 minutes (some in under one minute) and can run down to about 25% load. Where CHP is designed to island during grid outages, as EPA highlights for resilience, it becomes more critical to the host and needs redundancy.13

FavourableEconomics depend on matching heat demand. DOE's sizing examples run 7,450-8,240 hours a year, with an ideal-conditions case at 8,700 hours. Engine power-to-heat ratios of 0.52-1.07 suit hospitals, food plants and universities with steady hot water use. Cooling loads let trigeneration use summer heat that would otherwise be dumped, raising hours in warm climates such as India's.14

FavourablePackaged CHP makes brownfield fit easier: DOE's eCatalog listed 247 packaged offerings from 24 kW to 7.5 MW. Integration work covers the electrical interconnection, heat tie-ins and emissions permits. Absorption chillers are bulky but can replace electric chillers in an existing plant room. Micro-CHP for homes is led by Japan's ENE-FARM fuel cells: about 550,000 units had been sold since the May 2009 launch, according to a November 2025 industry paper to a METI study group, with overall efficiency of 85% or more and 500-700 W of back-up supply during outages. Unit prices had fallen below 2 million yen by 2015 (NEDO, dated). Osaka Gas says its solid-oxide Type S model (1 kW or less) reaches 55% electrical and 87% total efficiency (company claim).248914
