Metal-air batteries: Economics
A USD 2 billion bet on rare multi-day blackouts
What this tab covers Economics and financial structure: capital versus operating cost, levelised cost of storage, and how the asset earns money. The iron-air investment case is a bet on very low cost per kWh for rare multi-day events. Form has raised more than USD 2 billion and reports an 80 GWh backlog, but publishes no current cost or LCOS; its first utility system was still being completed in late 2026, and its Aug 2026 round was reportedly at a lower valuation.
Capex versus opex
MixedForm does not disclose current costs; its target is USD 20 per kWh, which it says would compete with natural gas. That is about one-eighteenth of the PNNL 2021 estimate for a 10-hour lithium iron phosphate system (USD 356/kWh, ratio calculated). Operating costs will depend on charging power, because low efficiency multiplies the cost of each MWh bought. Form raised a USD 750 million Series G led by T. Rowe Price in Aug 2026, taking total equity above USD 2 billion; Axios reported a pre-money valuation of USD 1.75 billion, down from about USD 3 billion in Oct 2024 (not confirmed by Form).11416

MixedNo independent LCOS for iron-air was found. Classic LCOS per MWh flatters frequently cycled batteries and penalises multi-day stores expected to discharge only 25 to 43 times a year, so iron-air is better compared on cost per MW of firm capacity against a new gas peaker, which Lazard puts at USD 144 to 276/MWh of output in the US in 2026. For 4-hour lithium-ion Lazard gives USD 210 to 292/MWh (2026).212

MixedRevenue is mainly capacity or resource adequacy: covering several days of low wind or solar. Arbitrage revenue is limited by low efficiency and few cycles. Large buyers want firm clean supply: in Feb 2026 Xcel Energy and Google announced 300 MW / 30 GWh of Form batteries for a Minnesota data centre, alongside 1.6 GW of new wind and solar, subject to Minnesota regulatory approval, with first modules due to ship by end 2028 and phased operation to 2031. Aluminium-air targets a different market: backup power and range extension for vehicles, plus telecom towers.1671617
