Small, airborne and traditional wind: Impact on the biosphere
Small footprint, little studied, and a boost for cleaner shipping
What this tab covers Effects on human, animal, plant, fungal and microbial life and on whole ecosystems: in the short term (construction and early years), medium term (operating life) and long term (decommissioning and legacy).Impacts are small in total because the deployed capacity is small. Small turbines have little studied impact on wildlife; the effects of kites on birds have not yet been well studied.
Share of ship propulsion energy from wind assist 5-20%7 Life-cycle emissions, onshore wind for comparison, g CO2e/kWh 11 (median)9Effects over time
| Life affected | Short term | Medium term | Long term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Humans678 | Installation risks on masts and roofs. | Noise near homes; cheaper power off-grid where diesel is the alternative; wind-assisted ships cut fuel burn and its air pollution. | Heritage windmills such as Kinderdijk remain cultural landmarks. |
| Animals106 | Little evidence of effect. | Bird collisions are well studied for large turbines (mean 234,000 a year in the US) but little studied for small ones; bird reactions to kites have not been well studied. | Little evidence of effect. |
| Plants | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect. |
| Fungi and soil life | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect. | Little evidence of effect. |
| Ecosystems7 | Little evidence of effect. | Wind assist supplies 5-20% of propulsion energy on retrofitted ships, cutting fuel burn and emissions at sea. | Little evidence of effect. |
How the effects are reduced
Small turbines are best placed on open sites well above surrounding obstacles, which both raises output and reduces noise complaints. For airborne systems, flight zones, automatic landing in storms and studies of bird behaviour (SkySails has studies under way) are the main safeguards.
