Adhesives and sealants: Cycles

How monomer spikes squeeze then lift adhesive margins

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

Adhesive prices are set by formulators, not markets, so the cycle shows up in margins. When VAM, acrylates or isocyanates spike, branded makers raise prices in steps and margins dip for a few quarters; when inputs fall, prices are sticky and margins widen. Consumer and DIY volumes are steady; industrial volumes follow packaging, construction and car output. Pidilite's margins are the clearest public gauge in India; Henkel's and H.B. Fuller's segment margins globally.

The spread to watch Branded adhesive gross margin (sales minus raw materials)

Computed from company results. Pidilite's gross margin rose about 100 bps (standalone) and 160 bps (consolidated) year on year in Q4 FY26; absolute levels not published here.

Booms and busts

  1. 2021-2022

Post-COVID demand and Gulf and US supply outages lifted VAM and acrylates; formulators raised prices several times and margins fell across the sector.

VAM price not retrieved here; Indian paint and adhesive makers took about 22-25% price increases over 18 months (ICICI Direct, for Asian Paints)

  2. FY2025-FY2026

Stable input costs and volume growth lifted Pidilite's margins and earnings.

Pidilite consolidated EBITDA margin about 22.9% (FY25, implied) to 24.1% (FY26) (FundsIndia); Q4 FY26 standalone 23.4% vs 20.6% a year earlier, underlying volume growth 15.3% (Indiantelevision)

  3. 2026

The West Asia conflict cut Gulf supply and raised freight; VAM prices surged and the weighted raw-material basket of Indian adhesive makers jumped.

VAM up about 70%; Pidilite raw-material basket up 40-50% (FundsIndia, 2026)

What drives the cycle

  • VAM, acrylate and isocyanate prices. Most binders are made from these monomers; formulators pass on costs with a lag of one or two quarters.
  • Construction and furniture activity. Wood glue, tile adhesives and sealants track housing and renovation.
  • Packaging and e-commerce volumes. Carton, label and laminating adhesives follow consumer goods shipments.
  • Lightweighting and EVs. Structural bonding replaces welding and fasteners; battery packs use new adhesive types.
  • Recyclability rules. EU packaging rules favour adhesives that wash off or allow mono-material packs.
