Autocatalysts: Production
Why three Western coaters dominate a shrinking market
What this tab covers Who makes it and how much: world capacity and output, utilisation, the top producing countries and companies globally and in India, concentration, new capacity coming, and each region's position.| Measure | Figure | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| World capacity | not published | ||
| World output | catalysts for roughly 90 million light vehicles plus trucks and two-wheelers a year (indicative); 378 t PGM (2025) | JM PGM Market Report 2026; WPIC Q2 2026; vehicle count indicative | |
| Capacity utilisation | not published | JM Clean Air sales fell 7% at constant currency in FY2025/26 on weaker North American truck and European diesel car output. | JM FY2025/26 results presentation |
| Concentration | three Western coaters (JM, Umicore, BASF) hold most of the world market outside China and Japan (indicative) | No published market shares. JM calls itself market leader in diesel; Umicore cites a strong position in light-duty petrol. | JM FY2025/26 presentation; Umicore FY2025 results |
| New capacity | no new capacity; consolidation | JM is refocusing on Clean Air and PGM Services after selling Catalyst Technologies to Honeywell (completed 17 Jul 2026, enterprise value £1,325 million) and is commissioning a new UK PGM refinery for 2027. | JM FY2025/26 results |
Top producing countries
- China: largest vehicle producer; local coaters (Sino-Platinum, Weifu, Sinocat) plus JM, BASF, Umicore plants
- EU: JM, Umicore, BASF headquarters and plants
- United States: BASF, JM, Umicore, Cataler plants
- Japan: Cataler (Toyota group), Umicore-Shokubai joint venture
- India: coating plants of the global makers serve BS-VI cars and two-wheelers

India makes about 30 million vehicles a year including about 20 million two-wheelers (SIAM FY2025, indicative), all needing BS-VI catalysts. Coating is done locally by the global makers, but all PGMs are imported and there is no domestic PGM refining at scale.
Position by region
| Region | Position |
|---|---|
| US | EPA 2027 truck rules support heavy-duty content; tariffs and anti-dumping duty of 133% on Russian palladium (2025). |
| EU | Euro 7 (Regulation 2024/1257) adds brake and tyre particle limits and durability; ICE car sales end 2035 under current law. |
| India | BS-VI since April 2020 lifted catalyst content; all metal imported. |
| China | China 6b since July 2023; fastest shift to battery cars cuts demand. |
| Japan | Hybrid-heavy fleet keeps catalyst demand. |
| Middle East | Small vehicle production. |
