Pharmaceutical excipients: Overview

What fills, binds and coats every tablet you swallow

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Excipients are everything in a medicine except the active ingredient: fillers, binders, disintegrants, coatings, lubricants and solvents. They often make up most of a tablet's weight. Most are made from farm and forest materials: lactose from whey, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) from wood pulp, starch and sugar alcohols from maize, plus synthetic polymers such as povidone and methacrylates. The global market was about $9.3 billion in 2025 (Statifacts), and India's about $400 million (MarketsandMarkets). Changing an excipient means re-validating a formulation, so supply is sticky and quality failures are costly.

Volume not published as global tonnage Market value about $9.32 billion (2025); $8.83 billion (2024); MarketsandMarkets uses a larger base of about $11 billion (indicative) Growth 5.85% a year 2025-2034 (Statifacts); India 6.9% a year 2025-2030 (MarketsandMarkets) Statifacts via BioSpace (July 2025); MarketsandMarkets India excipients page (2025)

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Fillers and binders (lactose, MCC, starch, dicalcium phosphate)50%about $4.7 billionbasis Fillers give a small dose of API enough bulk to make a tablet; binders hold it together. Lactose and MCC dominate because they compress well, are inert, cheap and have long safety records. Statifacts (2025) Mannitol
dicalcium phosphate
co-processed excipients
Coatings (HPMC, polyvinyl alcohol, methacrylates)18%about $1.7 billionbasis Film coatings mask taste, protect from moisture and control release. Enteric and sustained-release methacrylates (Evonik Eudragit) allow drug release in the intestine. This is the fastest-growing function in the forecast. Statifacts (2025) Sugar coating (older)
Disintegrants (croscarmellose, sodium starch glycolate, crospovidone)11%about $1.0 billionbasis Superdisintegrants swell in water and break tablets apart quickly so the API dissolves. Used at 2-8% of tablet mass (indicative). Statifacts (2025) Starch
Lubricants, glidants, solubilisers, preservatives and other21%about $2.0 billionbasis Magnesium stearate, talc and colloidal silica help powders flow and release from presses; solubilisers (polysorbates, cyclodextrins) and biopharma excipients (sucrose, trehalose, polysorbate 80) stabilise injectables and biologics. Statifacts (2025) Sodium stearyl fumarate
Function shares are of 2024 market value from Statifacts; by type, lactose-based products were about 42% and cellulose-based about 15%. Tonnage is not published.

From raw material to user

  1. Raw materials Whey from cheese making, wood or cotton pulp, maize starch, and petrochemicals for synthetic polymers.
  2. Primary processing Lactose is crystallised from whey; MCC made by acid hydrolysis of purified pulp; starch wet-milled from maize.
  3. Pharma-grade refining Milled, spray-dried or granulated to controlled particle size under excipient GMP (IPEC-PQG).
  4. Formulation Blended with API and compressed or filled; North America is 38% of demand by value (Statifacts 2024).

Three things to know

  • Fillers and binders are about half of the $9.3 billion excipient market (Statifacts, 2025).
  • Roquette bought IFF Pharma Solutions (Avicel MCC and cellulosics) for up to $2.85 billion in 2025, consolidating supply.
  • India's excipient market is only about $400 million (2025), small against its generic output, because many grades are imported (MarketsandMarkets; import share not published).
